i ran a carfax on a 944 and found this under detailed history:

in 95 it had 108k miles. from 99 on is what i am suspicious of because the ebay ad says it has 111k miles. is it really possible that its only been driven about 3,000 miles in 9 years?

In many states, like Arkansas and possibly ALL states, once a car is 10 years old, it is considered "odometer exempt". Nothing to worry about at all. Just a government thing.

That is the case in FL as well. Fl also has an "exceeds mechanical limits" designation as well. That sounds quite scary, but only means the odometer has flipped.

honestly in MI i have probably registeed about 40 vehicles all over the year range, and dont think they have ever asked my mileage, inc. my 96 blazer. Never understood it.

The odometer certification requirements are based on a federal law, which does not apply to vehicles over 10 years old.

well, put it this way. 3,000 / 9 = 333 miles per year / 12 = 28 miles a month = less than a mile per day.... so go figure. Bet that odo has been rolled back, or the car is badly in need of a timing belt change from sitting around so long - same for hydraulics, etc. Possible but highly improbable.

Most likely is a broken odo though I have 2 cars that has been driven less than 300 miles in the last 10 years. My 66 Renault Caravelle (probably only 300 in the U. S. left though its a fairly cheap car) and my 89 951 (sat for 7 of the 10 years and moved for street cleaning the last 3).

What year is the car? If it's an early, there could have been 100k in that 9 years...

The easiest way to confirm all of this would be to get some mait. records from somewhere in that gap and see what the mileage was listed as there...

when I registered mine it had 369 miles. Not thousand, just 369 miles. I also checked the odemeter error box.

NJ DMV does not exempt vehicles from mileage readings based on age. A title will give a mileage OR excedes mechanical limits OR TMU (true mileage unknown). A car brought into the state that has been exempt will usually be titled as TMU, same as a car that is known to have been turned back so the value of a car from one of these states is often lower.
