Angry What's Up With my Power Windows?

I have a 1999 Porsche Boxster. All of a sudden my windows won't go up or down, and the driver side doesn't do it's automatic adjustment when you close the door, so the door does not really shut right.....

Any suggestions? This happen to anyone else?

Thanks!

deliriousga,

Haven't done that yet, will check when I get home today.....

There are some other issues with the car too....

could be fuse related, but they started happening previous to the window.

Horn is not working and right taillight.

Will check all.... thanks.

Window fuse is 30Amp in row D, slot 1
Regular two-tone horns fuse is 25Amp in row B, slot 3.

If the fuse for the horn is ok, there is also a relay just above the fuse panel. It is in slot #10, part #141 951 253 B. You can get one at Radio Shack to replace it for $7, just take the relay with you so they can match it. Either that, or you can get one at the dealer for about $20. Cheapest route to start.

With the right tail light, is it the regular stop/tail light or the rear fog light? The rear fog light is only on the left side so someone behind you does not confuse it with brake lights. If it's the brake light, the bulbs are accessed from inside the rear trunk. The carpet pulls forward and the assembly is right there. Any auto shop should be able to look up the right bulb for you.

9 times out of 10 it's a fuse or relay with electrical stuff. If everything is ok with the fuses and relay, post it and I will see if there is anything else you can check. Also post if all of these things happened at once or at different times.

I have the relay charts on my website if you need them http://www.theschillings.com/boxrelay.htm

Good luck!

All these things happened at different times...

John

Thanks so much. The window issues was definitely a fuse. And the right rear running light was a bulb, that was replaced with a bad bulb, but now is working fine.

The horn, not quite so good and outcome. The horn has actually never worked, and the reason why, is there was no fuse. Well, when you put the fuse in, the horn just keeps honking. This one is going to take a little extra work I think.

Thanks for your help.

Glad to hear most of it works now.

The horn problem definitely sounds like a relay issue. This looks long, but I don't know how much you know about servicing the car so I'm including everyting. It's really very quick and easy. The free, easy way to check it is to swap relays with another of the same kind and see if it takes care of the problem. The good news is that particular relay is the most common in the car so there are plenty to swap with.

Look up under the dash, above the fuse box and you will see one of the relay boxes. Before you pull relays, disconnect the negative battery terminal. The battery is in the rear center area of the front trunk, above the spare tire under a plastic cover that has two tabs that turn to pop the cover loose. The negative battery connector is on the driver's side and you need a 10mm wrench or an adjustable wrench to unscrew it.

If you can't see the numbers on the relay box here's the reference chart http://www.theschillings.com/boxrelay.htm

Once the battery is disconnected, pull relay #10 out and put it on the floor. They are tough to pull out so be patient, grab the sides of it, wiggle it back and forth a little and it will slowly pull out. Next pull relay #12 out and plug it into the #10 spot. (#12 is for the fog lights so you won't hurt anything when it is pulled out). Put the fuse back in for the horn then reconnect the battery and see if the horn is still messed up.

If the horn works correctly, jump up and down, this is going to be cheap. Tighten the battery terminal and take the bad relay you put on the floor to the dealer or Radio Shack and get a new one to put back in the fog light.

If the horn doesn't work correctly, then disconnect the negative terminal again and pull the horn fuse out and put the relay you pulled out into the #12 slot for the fog light. You will have to get a mechanic (preferably Porsche specialist)

Very important before you start the car after disconnecting the battery!! You need to put the key into the ignition and turn it to on, but do not start the car. Let it sit in that position for at least 1 minute. Next, turn the key to the off position and keep it there for at least 10 seconds. After that you can start the car. It needs to do this so the computer can recalibrate the fuel mix and test all of the systems before starting. If you don't do that, you can get false warning lights.

Hope it helps!

Fuses would cause the windows to completely fail. Relays would probably do the same, but could possibly be specific to your problem. Other, more likely cause, could be the window regulator in the door panel. It "feels" the door handle open and tells the window to drop to clear the top.

The windows on my 1999 Boxter (45,000m) occais ionally suddenly drop to the normal top down operation position but then cannot be raised to close or down to open. To make them work again, you have to open the top partially then close. The dealer has replaced the switch at to latch but in a few days in happened again. Finally, the dealer added a small piesc of foam with adhesive back into the latch area and that did the trick...for awhile. Then, this week it happened again and I had to do the top sequence again. The dealer has gone up the flagpole to Porche with no ideas as to cause. Has anyone experienced such an aggravation?? Thanx

Default problem with power windows

Hi,

I have been having a serious problem with my Porsche Boxster; the windows go down automatically when driving and even when the car is stopped and locked. I just got this car, it's a '99 with 26K miles. My guess is that there is a short somewhere in the electrical system but the dealer can't seem to find where the problem is coming from. Sometimes bothe windows go down and sometimes it's only the passenger window. I have been reading a lot online and found out that I am not the only one with this problem. I have already checked the roof microchip and it seems to work fine. Could someone help me out here ?

Thank you,

Vernon, I have seen that problem. It is dealing with the switch on the latch. If they installed the switch correctly, and you still have problems, the latch may have some wear and may have to be replaced.
Also, check the relay under the dash and make sure its pluged in good. It looks like a double relay.

As for the horn problem, where it goes on at times when driving. The problem is the "Craddle" that the air bag mounts on to. If you look at the craddle, you will notice the 4 areas where it connects has some rubber mounts....this area gets out of shape, which causes the horn to honk when the slightest bit of pressure is applied. You should replace the craddle, which is the correct thing to do, however I have seen people install small washers which could be a temp. fix.
