I am trying to identify a particular Porche Paint color. It is a baby blue color that was used (I believe) for the '73 Rs and perhaps '74 as well. I think it might be called Gulf Blue or Le Mans Blue???? Any help! (or pictures of cars in this color)

I believe it is Mexico Blue. There was one for sale awhile back on Ebay. There is another color very similar, I forgot the name. Porsche AG did not accept one of them for paint to sample due to the result not looking uniform on the vehicle.

There are two Mexico Blue 997s on 6speedonline.com. I'm certain there are plenty of pics of thi color on that forum.
The color "gulf blue" I believe refers to the old GT40 (?Porsche) race cars sponsored by Gulf Oil and had an orange stripe down the middle of them....IIRC.
If I'm not mistake, Dan (Edgy) wanted Gulf Blue on his 997 and was turned down by Porsche and went with another nice blue hue without going boo hoo!

Sorry to get into this thread so late.

Porsche isn't painting all the colors that they used. In fact, I had ordered Gulf Blue which was found on the 917s in the 1970s. After a long drawn out ordering process, Porsche AG finally came back and told me they couldn't paint it any longer,--because of the clear coat process now found on the variety of parts supplied by the 997 vendors. Eventually I went with Porsche's 1997 color called Blue Turquoise because I fundamentally like blue but had to go with a darker color. It's a lot rarer than the more popular Mexico Blue but I think the Mex. is a little too bright for me. I strongly suggest that you choose a color that Porsche has done within the last ten years,--or be prepared for problems. They won't just come out and tell us up front what colors they CAN'T do. Nuts. Typical Porsche arrogance. Ultimately, I'm going to be happy with the blue turquoise as it will be the only 997 in that color,--and possibly the 996s as well. Last time they regularly shot that color was in 1997 on the 993 and 993tts.

I think if you're going to order a Porsche you need to order something unique. Here in Santa Barbara you will simply see yourself coming and going all the time with a silver.

Eric - are you sure that second picture is Gulf Blue? Looks more like Riviera Blue to me (was used on 993's and is a little lighter than Mexico Blue).

BTW, they did make one or more CGT's in Gulf Blue - but I'm sure for the profit they had on those they could swing it, whereas Edgy has bullet proof info on the 997.

There was a Gulf Blue (L328) seen on the 1973 RS cars. It's very similar to the competition Gulf Blue made famous by the Gulf Oil Oil company in the 60s and 70s. Then there are some others, like Maritime Blue, and Mexico Blue. Although the color plates are quite terrible on their online sight, I highly recommend you contact and order from PaintScratch.com a sample of the colors you have your choice down to. You can then judge for yourself what you think the color you have in mind is.

As I mentioned earlier, Porsche will not paint over 140 different colors that have resulted in a virtual two-tone look that they don't like and they assumed their customers would not like either. For the Carrera GT, being such a limited production auto, Porsche uses an entirely different process for painting them, than the 997.

I highly recommend that you start in Rennlist and go to the 993 forum and others and simply do a word search for BLUE and you will get more history on this than you can stand. You can also sift through the photos that many of the 993 owners have submitted for some additional ideas.

Silver's boring,--but it sells!

I had no idea there are so many great blue colors! I know the color I am looking for is not Mexico Blue (though this color is quite attractive!). If anyone happens to subscribe to the UK magazine called total 911, they sent out a 2007 calendar and the July 2007 photo car is a 2.8 RSR painted in the exact color I am looking for. Anyone seen this and can identify the color?
