Default Super90 crank vs. Type I VW, a tech question.

What are the differences between the front end of a Super 90 crankshaft and a Volkswagen Type I crank? More specifically, will a Type 1 VW crank pulley fit on the Super90 crank? The Super 90 pulley is 145mm OD, but I can't measure the offset or inner hole diameter. There seems to be plenty of space between the block and the pulley.

Thanks.

Go to www.356registry.org and, at the home page, look for the 356talk link...subscribe (it's free) and post your question...you'll be receiving an answer in no time...best place to get technical knowledge in minutes...

PS. When asking...be polite and beaware of the curmudgeons!

My dad's on the talk list and hates getting his email constantly filled, and I've heard there's an underground movement to move to a web forum layout, and I'm well aware of the curmudgeons (who I also hear are preventing movement to the newer vBulletin format, which is why I asked here. There HAS to be some knowledgeable 356ers on rennlist .

I'd say Rennlist is far more rich in 993's technical Gurus than 356ers...

A good technical reference is Duane Spencer's "Porsche 356 Performance Guide"...

Good luck...

The ID of a VW pulley is 46.0mm.
The length of the bore of the pulley is 25mm.
The groove is 20mm from the inner face of the pulley bore.

You could wait forever for an answer on the 356 Club Forum.
Not that there aren't a lot of guys who could answer your questions...it's just that very few folks ever post there other than the club officers.
The Registry Talk List is your best bet, although prepare to be flamed for even suggesting putting VW parts in a Porsche. A few of the snowbirds over there are extreme purists.

go to the vendors list on the Registry & call one of the shops that builds 356 engines to ask the question directly.

The Talk List is a tremendous resource and, yes, there are some that want to move to a BBS format, but I doubt that will happen for a long time. I kind of enjoy the Talk List as it is, despite its limitations, but there IS a wealth of information available from the (typically older, curmudgeon-like) participants.

If you are a member of the 356 Registry (as anyone remotely interested in 356's should be), you can also search the Talk List archives, and you might find an answer there.

Or call Alan at The Stable in San Francisco and he'll probably have an answer for you.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to pull the stock pulley hopefully this weekend and see how it compares.
