Brighter headlights for 356?
All,
A friend of mine has candlepower 6 volt 60/55 watt bulbs in his 356 and he's wondering if there's a way to light up the road more. The question is, is there a different bulb that he can use to provide more light, or is the current set-up about as good as it's going to get?
Thanks!

Convert to 12v, and run relays to the bulbs with e-code H4 housings and 110/90W Philips Narva bulbs. be sure to run 10ga wiring and to use relays. That will put out more light than HID's.
How much was he looking to spend?

I've had 6 volt cars for years and never felt I had any visibility issues. Many people would consider the car devalued with a 12 volt conversion. Stick with the six.
Clean ALL your contacts and grounds. Many people like the Joe Leoni relays available from his website. Here's joe's website http://www.356electrics.com/

In addition to the relay, I got the H4 6v bulbs from Joe, which make a big difference. Get the starter relay from him too. Actually, I think I have bought everything Joe sells. Including his model specific electrical book, which is invaluable, the one book I think every 356 owner MUST HAVE.
By the way, if you contact him, Joe's 80th birthday is tomorrow!

Thanks for your help with this troos and jcnesq! I definitely think the relays are a good direction to go. He owes me my Rennlist membership fees for next year for this tidbit of info!

Didn't know there was 6v H4 bulbs available. On any note, new housings will be an improvement.
12v conversion is about $750 for the alternator / stand, then you need to source wipers and a starter, then change bulbs and ignition.
yes, the curmudgeons and 6 elbowed concours judges will scoff at the 12v conversion.

Thanks again for your help, bleucamaro. I think he is going to wind up going with the relays from 356 Electrics, but I'll try to talk him into new housings.
