Default Grinding starter

First start-up of a 1960 356b...car had been dissassembled for paint when I got it but I was told it was a driver.

Converted to 12v.

Starter grinds badly when key is hit.

Took starter and solenoid are and tested them. They test fine.

Starter is 6v, solenoid is 12v.

This would be what I would expect to find.

Is it common on the 356 to change to a 12v ring when changing to a 12v system? Is there much chance I am sticking a 6v starter against a 12v ring?

Anything else that causes these to grind when engaged?

Sorry for knowing so little

The teeth/gears/engagement surfaces on the flywheel and starter are different between the 6v and 12v versions... dropping the engine will only take an hour for your first try.. I'd look at the flywheel and see if grinding is obvious... or remove the starter and check there...

Replaced the solenoid with a new unit, cleaned and lubed the starter, problem solved.

Stoddard has a good deal on 6V starters right now.
