New injectors for 86 928S???
Hello,
I would like to replace my injectors with new ones but I am not sure what to buy. I read some of the posts but I am confused.
It looks like many have used the Ford 19 for their S4 but needed to change the lower o-ring. It appears that the Ford 19 will fit the 85-86 without needing to change the o-ring. Is this correct?
Another post says that a 24lbs injector is stock for the 85-86. Is this correct?
I am looking for a new drop-in. What do I need?
Thanks

Shane is correct: standard Ford Motorsport 24# injectors drop right in w/o any o-ring changes or anything: about $220 or so from Summit or Jegs.
Also, while you're in there breaking down the fuel rails, prevent the #1 fire hazard in 928's & replace the front high-pressure fuel hose: you can repair with 5/16" EFI line & EFI clamps, or just spend $28 on a new one from Porsche. Same with the return line (use 5/16 EFI hose & clamps).

Huh, I wasn't privileged to the price increase on 24# injectors, though I knew the 30's went up quite a bit. Not sure why Ford's done this.
But, the Accel injectors are now cheaper than the Fords, so you can get those in lieu for cheaper, or as per above, send out to a company like RC Engineering (or the others mentioned on this site, I'm unfamiliar but know there's a favorite) for rebuild.

Thanks for the input.
The Accel 24 150824 cost about $210. Is this the correct part that will fit? Is this a quality injector or do you recommend a professional cleaning of the original? Thanks

Yes, The Accel/Ford Motorsports injectors fit the S4/GT/GTS with an o-ring change at the nipple to seal in the S4 intake manifold, otherwise, they drop in. Oder those o-rings from Porsche or from an import auto parts store.
S4/GT/GTS: 19lb injectors (factory size) (GTS came with 19lb right???)
'85-86: 24lb injectors (factory size)

YES THEY DO!
Injectors have moving componenets and an electromagnetic coil. All these parts can and will over time fail. There is no way to rebuild an injector. All they can do is clean them, paint them and put fresh external components(O rings, filter, pintle cap) on. At a cost of littel over $200/set There is no good reason not to buy a new set.

The Ford Racing injectors have been changed a bit. The 19 lb. injectors are now a Denso product and have the standard "piddle" valve like the stock 928 injectors. The 24 lb. and bigger injectors are usually Bosch and have a 4 hole design that makes for better/finer spray.

And injectors do wear out. They use an electric coil to fire a small solenoid that allows fuel to pass through the oriface. Some clog, some drool, some have an intermittant open circuit. It's like any other servo-mechanical device, it can fail.

I just put a set of Ford Racing 24lb/hr injectors in my '85. Injectors can wear out simply because they do have moving parts. I replaced mine because one started leaking where the outer housing is crimped around the internals. No rebuild service would correct that. Even at $300 the Ford injectors are the best deal out there. They're sort of a hybrid between the Bosch design 2 and design 3 injectors. Basically, they look like a design 2 but have 4 little sprayers instead of one larger one. Does it make a difference? Who the hell knows. The ever so slightly improved performance of the newer design may be useful in helping older vehicles get through emissions testing.
'85 and '86 models use 24lb/hr injectors. The ones from Ford Racing are a direct drop in with no o-ring changes needed. Just remove them from the box and put them on the car. I think the older 32 valve engines use the higher volume injectors since they lack knock sensors.
The S4 uses the lower volume 19lb/hr injector and an o-ring change is needed prior to installation. I'm not sure what the issue is with the o-rings (whether the ones on the Ford injectors are too big or too small) but I do know that the local parts store carries injector o-rings. I bought two sets (16 o-rings total) but found they were too small for the manifold on my '85. They might work on the S4 at considerable savings ($10 versus $45 and the added convenience of local availability.)
