Default *%^^& dipstick won't come out

Preping the 85S for a full belt job/waterpump and the stupid dipstick will not come out. There is a 17mm but at the base of the pan but I can never get a good fit on the bolt because there is a lump on one side of the pan which prevents be from getting a good wrench around it. Any ideas or methods you guys tried? I'm taking my time and want to ask the board before I do something stupid and strip it. Any feedback would be great.

Thanks

Default Dipstick tube?

Dan,

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the same thing, but for mine, once you take out the (10mm?) bolt that holds it in place against the timing cover partway up the dipstick tube, you can just pull the dipstick tube up. There's a gasket down there that seals it, but it doesn't require any tools. My O-ring/gasket was toast, so I just used some RTV when I put it back in.

Mine didn't have anything holding it to the belt covers. I tried yanking it up with not dice. I original thought it just pulled right out like the 944's but I thought maybe the bolt down below is whats keeping it in there. I'm gonna go right out there and give it a really good yank and see what happens.

Thanks

Boy, I had the exact same problem on an 84.. I ended up buying a new extra long box end wrench, then I had to grind down the box to fit down onto the big nut. AND I STILL BUSTED MY FREAKING KNUCKLES WHEN IT BROKE LOOSE. I tried to get it off FOR DAYS.. before i resorted to this. The more i tried the more is got rounded off.

Dan,

Do you have a photo? I'm not sure what bolt you're referring to.

Also, the dipstick is just to test the oil level, I assumed you meant the dipstick tube, right?

Dan,

On mine, you just have to remove the top 10mm bolt shown here, then pull up the dipstick tube.

On mine, you just pull up and it comes free. If yours is set up differently, I'm afraid I can't help, and it sounds like Shark Attack has experience with that. Weird that the setup would be different.

(Damn, I guess that tensioner gasket is leaking worse than I thought. Amazing how much you can see when you stick a camera in there. How embarassing).

I used a flare nut wrench to get mine out. No big deal. Lucky I guess...

Thanks for the pictures. Im guessing yours is an 85 as well 32v engine? Mine is a compeltely different setup. Yep there is a bolt down there at the base of the tube where it connects to the oil pan.
Currently im taking a break on it. Gettin fustrated... ahh

Yep, mine's an '85. I don't know if yours is odd or mine (This is the only one I know, but I'm getting to know it REALLY WELL).

I know what you mean about taking a break. Have a beer, come back fresh. Dave A. sounds like he's got your answer, flare nut wrench and patience .

Where can I get a flare nut wrench? Sears? I'll give it a whirl. PO never maintained the car so as more parts come off more crap gets bought. We are nearing close to 2k in parts.
