With the release of the spces for the 2010 997 Turbo we see the departure of the 3.6 GT1 motor and the introdution of the 3.8 DI TT motor. Exciting of sad?

Not sad as long as I own my 03 Turbo with at its heart/soul a GT1 engine example.

The GT1 engine may be dead, in that is no longer being used in new modles, but it is too early to annoint the new engine as its worthy successor. Let's see how this new engine fares.

In the meantime... I'm going to enjoy the old engine a while longer, maybe resuming as early as today! Turbo almost out of body shop -- mule deer collision repairs complete, and I have expect to receive a call sometime today that car is ready to pick up.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I am excited to see how it performs and how reliable it will be, at the same time I feel relief that our engines already passed the test of time and proved to be excelent..
here is more info on the 3.8 DFI TT

The new Turbo features the first entirely new engine in its storied 35-year-history. The new flat-six boxer engine now displaces 3.8 liters and delivers 500 bhp, an increase of .2 liters and 20 bhp from the previous model. Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), a new expansion intake manifold first seen on the GT2 and Porsche's exclusive turbocharger system with variable turbine geometry (VTG) lead the innovations. Maximum torque is up by 15, to 516 lb. ft. when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo.

The Sport Chrono Package Turbo allows the 2010 911 Turbo to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds when combined with the new, highly acclaimed Porsche-Doppelkupplung, or PDK seven-speed transmission. Also included in the Sport Chrono Package Turbo is Porsche's innovative dynamic engine mounts. Introduced earlier this year on the 2010 GT3, the new mounts utilize magnetic fluid that automatically adjusts for comfort or sport, depending on the driving conditions. Top track speed is 194 mph for both the Coupe and the Cabriolet models.

That makes me excited not sad!!

Job security ?

The new engine MIGHT someday prove to be nearly as good as the M64/GT1 derived lump.....

However, IMHO, the bar has been set pretty high by what is perhaps the best production Porsche engine EVER.

I was going to say the same thing HAHA!!

Careful Lewis, I have a warm spot for the "Cayenne" V8 Turbo Motors on top of that prestige list of Porsche motors

40% fewer moving parts and the elimination of the intermediate shaft has got to be a good thing. But until this engine becomes race tested, I don't know what to think of it.

Job security? Not really. If the new Turbo block is the same as the 2nd gen DFI 997, then I think it will be just as bulletproof as the M64/GT1. It still has 8 main bearings, very nice/simple timing chain setup. I was very impressed with the new DFI block. It is a huge improvement over the M96 block without question. But yes, the M64/GT1 block is the best engine Porsche built IMHO too. For the case to have evolved so far speaks for itself. I too agree with the stance of "lets see how is does at Le Mans, ALMS, The Ring etc.. It will be very intersting to see what the boys at Wiessach(porsche motorsports) do in the near future. Will the GT3 and GT2 follow suite? I dunno, probably. But 3.2sec, 0-60mph. PDK with a true paddle shift option, please!!! That is going to be a hoot!!! PDK is another big question mark as far as its limits too. Will we see aftermarket tuners getting over 1,000 HP through those clutches? I am a fan of the proper 6 speed gearbox, but man, PDK is awesome too. The new stuff is just not breaking, the days of rear main seals, cam covers, transmissions, and major engine failures are is in the rear view mirror (with the exception to the GT3 rear main seal of course!). Panamera should bring in some work, Cayenne? the pig pen will always have some gravy in it. Sports cars? Time will tell.

"customer cars equipped with PDK transmissions cannot reliably sustain power in excess of 525 PS..." (=518 bhp)

http://www.porsche.com/international...ts/motorsport/

Well, that's a tough engine, much better than the Metzger engine!

MIGHT.....it says here you MIGHT be a winner - I think that was a furniture commercial as the husband reads the ad from the mail and the wife is in the process of cutting up the old furniture with a chain saw...............

As was stated a fair while back when the PDK/Turbo talk started (here and the 997T forum), the Turbo/PDK was viewed as a potential warranty (liability) issue for this reason.
Thus, its introduction was intentionally delayed (for about 1 year) in order to get some initial #'s on PDF reliability on the std Carreras (and maybe a small bit of data from the POS Panamera).
If it turns out to be an issue, the Turbo/PDK option (combination) will simply be withdrawn and customers allowed to wait, reconfigure or cancel their orders.
Given the current revenue situation and the VW ownership, they will start shipping cars...

I read today that the new GT3 will be the only 911 to retain the LeMans winning GT1 engine, enlarged to 3.8 litres. It will also be the only model produced without the new Direct Fuel Injection (DFI).

My guess is the new motor will perform better, have a longer production span, and take all the good from the GT1 and build on that.

It's evolution. It's why we're not still living in caves and trying to sort out the whole Fire/Spark thing!
