Castrol Edge Sport 10W60
Changed the oil this week. I've been running in all my older cars with this stuff and been very satisfied. Decided to try it in my '91 GT and is great, it runs smoother and the oil pressure never falls under 3bar mark (hot engine, fan running). Anyone tried it? In States it's called Castrol TWS 10W60 I think...as I remember it was recommended for BMW M5 with the V8 5liter engine.

10w60 WTF? That seems like big time overkill for a street car. Even the racers are using 20w50. Save that stuff for your dump truck.

Some guys on the German board use it. I am using Mobil1 0w40 but don't like the low oil pressure on hot days. Been thinking about switching to Castrol Edge 10w60 or Mobil 1 5w40 for turbo diesel trucks.

It's the factory fill for BMW M machines. The only place I can get it is through the local BMW dealer. I used it in my GT a few years back but at $9 per liter it's very expensive. Great oil, great oil pressure. For now I just use Royal Purple 20-50 since it's relatively cheap and available at the local auto parts store.

I have been using Mobile 1 15W-50 but just purchased some Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel after reading some threads here. I want a little better protection on startup and worry that the 15W may be too thick. We'll see how my hot oil pressures look after the change. Most of my trips are 10 miles or less. By the time I reach my destination the oil is just getting up to temp. I would think for most people a 20W would be even worse with the Royal Purple.
Now, if only they made a 5W-50 I would be all over it.

I guess I stand corrected on the 60w. But it seems awefull thick to me. I have been using the Mobile 1 0 w 40 and I like it. I would like to try the 5 w 40. I've been looking for this weight oil for over a year now and haven't seen it. Where do you find it? ( BTW, Walmart is not an acceptable answer)

FWIW, I recently switched from 0w40 M1 to 15w50 M1 with no noticeable difference in performance/idle/oil pressure. I only drive the 928 roughly 3k miles per year, though. Figured the 15w50 would be better for storage purposes.

Um....that's where I buy it, really. Autozone occasionally has the Euro 0W40. If I can't come up with that, I go with the diesel 5W40 (for my Audi). The 928 gets Rotella.

I was sold on synthetics many years back when I had to top of my old Corrado in the middle of a typical cold Ontario Canada winter. Grabbed the 10-40 standard stuff off the shelf of the cold garage...opened up and it woudn't pour at all..like molasses. Grabbed a quart of the 15-50 mobil one synthetic from the same place..and it poured in like water.
For our mild PacNW winters..15-50, 20-50, and even 10-60 are fine for me. Plus the TWS is a 10 W..so cold is even ok for that.

Yeah, I figured someone would say that. That seems to be where most Rennlisters get their Mobile 1. I don't shop at Walmart. I haven't been to one in at least 7 years. Any other suggestions? The Autozone and the Advance Auto here don't always carry the 0w40 and I've never seen the 5w40.

My wife was --shocked-- to see that the local W-M store carries the same stuff she buys at other places, but for a lot le$$. Amazing!

Wal-Mart isn't enslaving local native children in third-world countries at seven cents a day to produce their own cheaper version of Mobil-1. I don't understand your phobia about shopping for motor oil there.

So, does anyone have an alternative source for the 5w40? I cannot believe that it's made exclusively for Walmart.

I dumped in Castrol Syntec 20w-50 in mine. It's claimed to be specifically formulated for older engines...
“Today's engines face different demands than those of yesteryear. Now classic car owners who are particular about what they put in their vintage vehicles can receive modern wear protection from a high–zinc formula specially engineered for classic engines.”
