Default The non-Porsche Porsche Tax

So back in July I achieved my goal of owning a Porsche. I have a beautiful Agate Grey base Cayman that I managed to get 2500 miles on before the weather in NEO had me park it for the winter. Now that I have a Porsche in the garage I am finding I am dissatisfied with the garage. I want a nicer floor system and cabinets. I want to be able to put everything away so there is no clutter spoiling my view of the car. The several garage threads on Rennlist are not helping either. It is bad enough that I will be paying the Porsche tax to get it serviced, but now I am paying the additional tax to make me a happier owner and allow me to enjoy the ownership experience even more. Don't get me started on dreaming of the Porsche driving school and my second Porsche.

Just wait until you realize no other car will do.
There really is no substitute!

I went through the same thing when I brought my GTS 4.0 home. Looking at my first Porsche, I quickly concluded my garage just wasn't good enough.

It has turned into a much larger project than I anticipated. First, I went full on Marie Kondo with everything stored in my old garage cabinets. That resulted in full trash cans for weeks on end. Then new lighting. Then paint. Then a new TV. Then new shutters. Then NewAge Cabinets. Next, probably additional NewAge cabinets and probably epoxy surfacing on the concrete. It has been a fun project, but also excited to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Yeah I was measuring the garage and looking at the New Age cabinets today, along with Swiss Trax flooring. My challenge is my expensive but fun hobbies, Porsche, wine, travel, woodworking (I am setting up the shop too) and fly fishing.

Retirement is coming and I am thinking I will have things to keep me busy. And with retirement comes the planning for Porsche #2 to celebrate that accomplishment.

I clearly don't like paying taxes - even hidden Porsche taxes...

I have a similar (1st world) problem in that my Spyder has to share the garage with two other cars and my workshop. The problem is that I work in my workshop often using power tools to cut wood, grind metal, make sparks, spray paint, etc. all which tend to leave a layer of sawdust, soot, paint residue, you name it everywhere in the shop. So many times I've told myself, I don't need to back my clean white 718 Spyder (and before that my black 981 Cayman) out into the driveway because I'm just going to make one or two cuts. And that becomes 3 or 4 cuts and just enough to add a perceptible layer of sawdust to my cars. It's especially bad when the Spyder roof is down and the interior gets it. I've had enough. So today I started building a small garage for my Spyder inside my large garage. I call it a "garagette", or a "car-coon". It's a small enclosure to keep the dirt and dust off the Spyder. It'll have a sturdy flat top (more storage space) and clear acrylic sides so I can see my baby in there. Sliding doors (like shower doors) will allow access to car. Floor will be epoxy coated. And a motion sensor will turn on LED strip lighting inside the enclosure whenever you walk up to or drive into the enclosure. I drew it up on the computer - Image attached. The yellow and brown stuff already exists as part of my workshop. The gray enclosure is the car-coon. The front end of the car currently tucks under my work bench, so the car-coon is just an addition to the back of my workbench. We'll see if reality matches plan. Will send pics when car-coon is complete if it turns out nice. If it does not turn out nice, it never happened as far as you know.

Definitely a first world problem! I am fortunate in that the property I bought 2 years ago included a pole barn, which I have been converting to the woodshop. No problems with keeping sawdust away from the car for me.

Why not get a car cover?

Top 5 reasons I did not go with car cover:
1. I had a car cover years ago on an old 928 I had in the 90's, and never liked the idea of a dry cover rubbing against a dry car. Any dirt on either car or cover can result in fine scratches.
2. Knowing me I'd rarely use a car cover because I'm too lazy and "I won't make any dust in the garage this time". But then I will.
3. Storage space on top. Always looking for a place to keep the fake Christmas tree.
4. I want to just drive in and drive out. Installing and removing a car cover each time will take a minute (see #2).
5. But the main reason is that I like to design and build things, and now that I'm retired I have plenty of time for silly projects like this.

I have told my wife that our next home will be a garage with a house attached. Fortunately, she's ok with that. Now I just need to win the lottery.

Currently on the market in Paradise Valley, Az for $12,950,000.00

There's generally an abundance of available garage space and/or land to build garage space at most race tracks that makes a lot more sense than building that.

I also have non race collector cars that I restore and show. Plus I like working on the cars whenever I want. It keeps me out of trouble.

I asked my wife if it was okay to change our front entry doors to a garage door so I could park my Porsche in our front entry. She didn't go for it!
