Default PSE versus after-market

I am coming from an Audi S5 with an AWE Tuning Touring exhaust. While the PSE is good, I am not sure it’s aggressive enough for me. I only have about 600 miles on the car, but I am already thinking about an upgrade.

Question for those who have encountered this conundrum, does PSE grow on you over time or should I start to think about aftermarket options?

My 981 CGTS had PSE and it was great. But that was the flat 6. I made no changes to it. My GT4 I added Dundon headers. It sounds incredible. My girlfriend had a 718 base with standard exhaust and from the outside it sounded okay. From inside the cabin, not as much.

She was in an accident and now has a Cayman T on order which has PSE, so I'll be curious to compare with her previous car. I haven't seen, or heard, a ton of aftermarket exhaust options on the 718 that I love.

That said, I would definitely give it some more miles to see if you grow to like it more.

Check out Soul Performance for something to compliment the PSE. I had their headers and cats on my 991.2 and am already talking to them about components for my incoming 718. PM me and I can put you in touch there that will be happy to talk to you about what is available and discuss the options.

I definitely agree with this. The exhaust changes sound quite a bit (IMO) up as it carbons up.
If you want it louder there is always the "slide the joiner between the mufflers a bit to the side to leave a small gap" mod. It was quite common on 981s.

I installed the soul down pipe on my GTS, I really like the exhaust now. Throttle response is also better.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I am going to run this for a bit and see what happens. I really liked my AWE on my Audi, but there are a bunch of options for the 718 and I have heard great things about Soul.

If you ever have questions about Soul's exhaust offerings contact John Gaydos (johng@soulpp.com) or Mike Spock (Mike@soulpp.com) and tell him Bob Z. referred you. He would spend time with you even if you didn't but if you do you will be treated like a rockstar (in a good way)!

46,000 miles on my Boxster S, no PSE and when in Sport it sounds great. That being said, I am considering getting an AWE with one side muffler to get a little more sound. I was next to a Maserati and, needless to say, I felt small(er), that was until he tried to outdo me when it got curvy, no chance.

Soul Performance exhaust > PSE > ND2 Miata with GWR race.

PSE is pretty good, but it is fundamentally pretty conservative about how much noise it makes and when. It’s also doesn’t have the nice deep tone of the Soul exhaust.

Removing both mufflers brings out more of the sounds at every RPM and makes winding it out more dramatic.

There is a huge amount of dynamic range from coasting in normal to redlining it in sport. I never got that from PSE or my Miata.

I had a 2018 Boxster GTS 2.5 with standard PSE. After a couple thousand miles, I thought it sounded great -- plenty of snap, crackle and pop with PSE on in sport mode. I would definitely wait and see. (It's gone now - traded it in on a 2021 Spyder.)

Keep in mind Maserati probably has the best sounding 8s and 6s in the marketplace, they sound amazing stock comparably. Porsche, IMO, isn't known for great sound like the Italian cars.

Anybody have any videos (with good sound quality) for the Soul exhaust, or any others for that matter? '18 CGTS with PSE but it's a bit muffled for me...

Can't vouch for sound quality. It's an iPhone. https://streamable.com/dl4e2m
