Daily Driver Advice, base or s?
Looking at a new 2024 718 as a daily driver and trying to decide between the base model and the s (yes, I would go with the 4.0 if I could find an allocation...but that doesn't appear to be realistic before they get phased out to all electric). Going with a 6 speed manual, and from what I've read the performance difference is minimal, but that the 2.0 motor actually sounds more aggressive than the 2.5. I would not be tracking or racing the car at all, just some occasional back road driving, and would prefer the "better" sounding engine to enhance the driving experience. For people who've spent time with both of these models, which one would you go with? And yes, I know I could get an upgraded exhaust on either, but really just want to keep whatever I get stock. Thanks in advance.
Edit- Asking because of the review in this video, where he states the performance of the manual 2.0 is very similar to the 2.5, and that the 2.0 sounds angrier as it's more about the experience rather than the performance.

Drive them both…then wait for a 4.0/6 allocation

At first glance, I would get a base in your circumstances. It has way more power and handling than can be used responsibly on public roads (and even a base is an aggressive, well-balanced car on track). I'm not so sure that the sound is meaningfully different between them. I own an S with stock exhaust and have also spent time in the base both on road and track and never noticed this. When the 4 cylinder engines were new and controversial there were innumerable threads about the sound. I don't recall any of them having the observation that the 2.0 sounded 'angrier.' You should drive both to make an informed decision.
Also make sure that you're not going to option your base such that the options price approaches an S and the extra 0.5 l and 50 hp would be almost free. Upgraded wheels and other additions to a base that are standard in an S can add up quickly.
Good luck in either case. Fabulous cars.

If this is your true intention there are a couple of brokers on the forum that could get you an allocation in very short order for a minimal fee.

S is faster. 4.0 more expensive. I have a T (base 2.0) which is fine for me, had 997.2 GT3 sold. (Probably shouldn’t have sold the GT3 but that was 10 years ago and for me it was not a pleasure driving the car on the highway.
If you want to hear angry sounds, just put your wife or girlfriend in the passenger seat and tell her she’s getting fat. She will sound pretty angry.

Like you, I wanted a Cayman GTS with the 4.0 engine but my dealer said that the GTS 4.0 will be retired by the end of 2024 and with the waitlist that I would never see an allocation.
Not ready to be a guinea pig for an electric Cayman any time soon.

Personally, if it's gonna be a DD I'd buy the least expensive of them since the chances of it getting a little trashed are increased. Add an aftermarket exhaust if you want more noise.

Of course the 6 cylinder engines are Porsche's bread and butter, but the company has a long history building amazing 4 cylinder boxer engines as well.
I haven't driven the 2.0 in the base, but it also has great reviews.
Can't go wrong with either IMHO.

I (respectfully) disagree. The 2.5 is the most impressive 4 cylinder I've ever driven. And better than some V8's that I've driven!

I also have a 2020 M2 CS with DCT that feels like a bloated boat on the same day that I drive the Cayman S. I definitely seem to prefer the more sports car like Porsche.
The G87 M2 is even bigger so don’t think I will buy another BMW in the near future. Still trying to decide how long I will keep the 2020 M2 CS.

I'm not sure telling you to buy a much more expensive car answers your question.
If you know how you like to drive, the choice between the 2 and 2.5L will answer itself. The acceleration of the S is negligibly greater than the regular car, in practice you won't notice it. But if you plan to actually track it, then you probably will miss the extra power on the track.
The ride of the car is entirely dependent on your suspension. Any PASM will ride better than the fixed suspension on either version of the car. My Boxster S with the Sport PASM rides better on 20 inch wheels on crap Michigan roads than my 987 on 18 inch wheels.
The rest of it, it's the same car.

Go for a T version, best of both worlds. a few grand more than a base but it has the toys you want and you dont have to do much more to it

I've instructed bases on the track and they still fly. I'd be very happy with a base 718 if I got to option it myself. I thought it sounded fine too. There is no advantage to the S brakes. Only thing that sucks IMO is the open diff.
IMO I wouldn't load one up with options though. Pre-covid Ive seen a lot of bases at my local dealers with like a 25k+ build and I never understood paying GTS prices for a base. They also always sat forever and probably sold for a big discount. On the used market those big builds never did anything for resale as someone looking at a base is just looking to get into a Porsche for it being a Porsche, not because it has the right deviated stitching. IMo if you're buying a base its because money matters and if its a DD it's not a forever car so the cost of getting out of it should be factored in. If money doesn't matter GTS 4.0 should be easy to find an allocation for with a broker.
