Default Let's Talk Track Tires - 2024 Edition

ITT, we discuss track tires in 2024.

i currently have a set of 265/35 ,305/30 19 SC3R on my GT4 and they're just past the scrub in phase. will be comparing directly with a new set of RE71RS, with the caveat the RE71RS (255/35, 285/35 19) can't currently be had in my desired sizes.

How much camber do you have for those and did you use shims or camber plates or both to get it?

Got a fresh set of RE71RS in the 255/285 19’s to start the year. Still happy with them. I do feel like traction drops off noticeably by about 20 heat cycles even if there’s tread and rubber left.

i'm around -3.1F -2.6R would have to look it up. have camber plates and and maybe minimal shims in front, shims in rear. aftermarket toe links (might not be necessary with the plates), tie rods.

Excellent. Thank you for this. I'm worried if I go that wide in the front I'll have issues rubbing the fenders. I'm at -2.6 in the front with only shims so the bottom is pushed out but the top isn't pulled in beyond what the OEM adjustment allows.

Time to get camber plates...

You are going to like them...have a set for track duty on my 4RS. These wear out fast so don't overdrive the car and a minimum of -3 deg front is needed.

Probably. I just wish I knew for sure before going out and buying new tires, which I need to do this spring before getting out to the track for the first time. I bought a set of 19's with used up Hoosiers in those sizes on them so I'll probably take those out for a spirited drive once the weather gets nice just to see if there's any contact. Then I'll need to decide whether to buy narrower tires or get the camber plates first thing before buying tires. I also need a new windshield though so it's already going to be an expensive start to the season.

What vehicle? I thought you had a GT3.

No prob. I was previously running some 265/35, 305/30 RT660 and 305/30, 255/35 Cup2. Wheels are 19x9" ET50, 19x11" ET46 one set Apex SM10, the other VS5RS. For the RT660, no rubbing up front, but I think there would be if I weren't running the camber plates. I have very slight rubbing in the rear, but not enough to bother changing anything; my track is rough enough to give the suspension some good exercise.

I'm hoping so; I really liked them on my e90M, but they felt a little funky on the GT4. The first time out, I was actually having trouble getting the front to wear down to the ^ (little goodyear symbols in this case); unsure if my track was too low a grip surface that day, but these do seem to like very low pressures. They seem to want a TON of slip angle... if I got understeer, I found the car responded to just wrenching the wheel (a lot) further, more than it responded to reducing throttle to put weight on the front. That said, my next outing will be the first real one as they only have a couple heat cycles on them.

I find 30-31 psi is the sweet spot for these....I have -3 deg and looks like I will need a bit more if I want to balance inner-outer wear.
Rear at -2.5 is OK

Question about SC3R’s: I’ve read that they come with mold release on them which makes them greasy until it wears off. If the tires are heat cycled by the vendor, does that also wear off the mold release?

Probably not....mine were heat cycled but they took several 15 min sessions to stick. At the second day they were awesome.
