Why do Spyder variants not have the wind turbulence mitigating mesh inserts?
I’ve been wondering this a long time.
Spyder variants 981 and 982 have an open space within the supplemental safety (head restraints) behind the seatbacks whereas the non-Spyder variants have mesh inserts in those spaces which serve to mitigate wind turbulence.
Why did Porsche omit the mesh inserts on the Spyder variants? Can the factory pieces from non-Spyder variants be ordered in isolation and installed in those spaces on Spyder variants? Maybe someone makes these aftermarket?
I can say that the shape of the space there on my 981 Spyder is different from that on my 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 — I don’t know if Porsche changed the shape between 981 and 982 or if Spyder cars have their own shape as compared with non-Spyder variants.
Does anyone have comparative pictures and commentary?
I’ve attached a photo first of 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and next of Spyder RS.

Perhaps the humps behind those areas reduce the pressure enough to mitigate needing those inserts?
I'm sure it wasn't an oversight.

There’s way more wind turbulence in my Spyder than in my Boxster. It’s not close. Would be nice if the Spyder experience were the same in that regard. I agree they probably had a reason for it, and I’m wondering what it is. Drag maybe? Haha.

Woah. My first post disappeared. Uh oh.
Man this site does weird things sometimes.
Edit: I brought back post #1 as best as I could remember.

Ah, didn't see that picture before. Honestly it looks better without it. If it causes a little more turbulence, I'll deal with it.

You're talking about the central wind deflector, which is removable. It comes from the factory installed.
I’m talking with the mesh inserts in the supplemental safety (head restraints). 😃

And I didn't enter the chat when the picture you had was posted and your other posts weren't there when I made my subsequent post, I didn't see them when the post was made. I edited the previous comment, it wasn't clear to me without the first post. Sorry to have bothered you.

Ahh, the aesthetics now. Jeez. Don’t you want functionality too? Being able to drive at high speed on the highway without wind turbulence is a big deal. Not sure if you’ve driven Spyder and non-Spyder variants but it makes a significant difference.

No, I don't care about those screens. To me they look horrible and I can't believe it's that bad as I've been in a Spyder and it didn't bother me. I could care less about the functionality of an ugly screen for something I don't recall bothering me.

The boxster roll hoops have a larger opening. Maybe with the shorter spyder hoops, there’s no real advantage to the mesh.
