Default GT4/Spyder Spark plugs

How many of you have DIY'd spark plug change yourselves? How easy it to do and can anyone link me to the plugs? Does anyone have pictures or a video

Here are the plugs. Never did them on my GT4, but have done several times on 991 and 992 GT3 and it’s easy (get the Hazet socket recommended in the Workshop Manual). And hhis is the one for GT3 at bottom (not sure if GT4 is same not):

If the Hazet indeed is 18mm and not a hair thicker, it might, but only just might work. It's been proven in my thread the OP has been linked to in the other thread he recently started, that 18.4 mm is too thick for this job.

Leaving the issue of ultra thin spark plug socket aside, the spark plug job on 718 4.0 engine overall is quite a bit more demanding than on a GT3. You need several 3/8" extensions of various lengths and a swivel joint. Then also either a 3/8" torque wrench or a 1/2"->3/8" reduction to use with your 1/2" torque wrench (set to 32 Nm).

Maybe I worded it poorly, but meant that the OP should use whichever socket is recommended in the workshop manual for his car (whether same or different from one I posted, as an example).

I read that whole thread and still didn't know where to buy the correct socket lol. Someone made a homemade one and that's all I got from it. Where do I get the socket from?

Having made a custom plug socket wasn't my first choice either. I searched the whole internet and have bought quite a few supposedly ultra thin spark plug sockets before arriving at that point.

The thread can at least save you the trouble of undertaking the same journey and you know, that anything thicker than 18 mm will not work.

I tend to believe Porsche designed the spark plug holes like that on purpose (as the coils do not have an aftermarket alternative either and you have to buy them from Porsche). Seems like they don't mind making sure the Major maintenence is done at Porsche dealerships (just like tyre jobs on centerlock cars).

As more and more 718 4.0 cars keep coming up to the 4 year mark perhaps someone would come up with a suitable socket like the Duralast #72-376 mentioned in the thread, which was 17.8 mm, but unavailable to buy.

Try to find the instructions in the Porsche Workshop Manual - should specify the exact part to use (does in the GT3 manual: Hazet 4766-2)...

Can anyone post this for 718 GT4?

It does also seem that spark plugs are not available easily from makers like NGK. Has anyone found an alternate supplier for plugs?

The workshop manual (WM) lists the special tool number 9006. Not sure if its Hazet or not. The WM also lists the torque for the plugs at 15nm.

Thank you. Interesting, It’s 23Nm for the GT3/GT4RS. I couldn’t locate that socket number (but saw a reference to VAS9006 for a Porsche 918 socket), so I suppose it’s a VW group part number.

Np. Thank you for all your research and sharing. Hopefully as time goes on someone can chime in on what works off the shelf vs the custom approach.

I found this:
https://ctatools.com/products/2376

Its O.D. is 17.90mm. If that's true, this may be able to work as well.

Would this work?

Amazon Amazon

You will need various extensions to do the job, so if you don't have many, this kit may be useful.
