97% of 911's still on the road
I received two interesting reads through the PCA. The first is about the current 911 being voted the most reliable sports car. More interesting to me and I also think it should have been the title of the article rather than a side note, is the fact that over 97% of 911's sold in the last 25 years are still on the road. I guess you could argue it's a combination of the car and the way owners keep them up.

Just for grins since there are so many Cayenne and Panamera followers on the 993 board

I believe that many 911's are still on the road but 97%? If this were true how could many of the Porsche salvage businesses exist? The 911 didn't have huge production numbers relative to the rest of the automotive market.

Agreed, how can 97% of 3.2 carreras be "on the road", even if 100% of all later 911's are on the road the figure is still 95%.........................75% would be too high IMHO

Probably just a misprint. 97% is almost impossible. Between accidents and cars just 'running out of miles' after so many years would bring the percentage much lower than that.

Agree that this sounds really high. Only other thing I can think of is perhaps it is technically correct (the magic of statistics) if the recent model year productions is so much higher than earlier years and the result is that high production of models in the last 10-15 years brings up the overall average notably. I'm sure that earlier year percentages are quite low, but when you factor in the higher production and broader model lines of the later model porsches....perhaps one can technically say that 97% are still on the road?

It said it was a Canadian study......maybe just for Porsches sold in Canada the last 25 years, of which most are probably in the garage 7 months out of the year........?

While some of Porsche’s newer vehicles have been afflicted with engine problems, J.D. Power still gave the brand top marks, likely since its owner survey is based on the opinions of people who forked out good money for their cars. On the other hand, a Canadian study recently showed that 97.4 percent of Porsches from the last 25 years are still on the road, a testament to their longevity and robustness. Only time will tell if a current Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne or 911 will be as resilient.

Its because only 3 percent made it home... Sorry, its an old Harley Davidson joke that seemed to apply to the 97 percent still on the road claim...

The statistic I have, from my 2006 Porsche Boxster sales booklet, states, "More than 60% of all Porsche vehicles ever produced since 1948 are still on the road today".

I agree the number seems high. And I notice my title is wrong because I state 97% of 911's when the article says 97% of Porsches in the last 25 years (e.g 1986). So factoring in Cayennes, Caymans, etc. the production numbers are probably up around 300k. Production figures for 996's and 997's are very large compared to previous models. Even so, this would mean only 10k or so are now off the road. Like you guys I'd lik to see the basis.

Let's say they've average 8K/yr in the US since MY86. (Figuring the ~2K in the early '90s with the boom years, then where we are now at 6-7K/yr.) That's 250 cars a year being taken out of service. How often do we see a 993 end up at a wrecking yard? Doesn't seem like many per year, let alone per month.
