Default External Voltage Regulator Location

I am trying to check out a charging problem on my '80 911SC. I have my voltage warning light on. I thought I would start by checking out my voltage regulator. Where is it located -- I assume it is an external VR. Thanks in advance for your help.

The VR is built into the rear of the alternator.

If you're sure you have an external regulator, it would be on the drivers side of the engine compartment next to the CDI unit

VR has the yellow tape
