In case you didn't know, you can re-register the vintage plates w/TX.

I knew I could use year of manufacture plates... but can I register generic old plates? 1987 was after YOM....

I believe they have to be correct vintage for the car’s model year and not necessarily the exact year.
I have plates from 1988 for my 1989 Targa.

So true. I believe 75 was the last year (stamped). The next year 76 was a sticker placed on the 75 plate. I love the older plates on Texas hot rods and vintage cars/trucks.
It sucks that after 76 the only difference was that sticker..... for a number of years.

Yes! Tell us more! Inquiring minds want to know how you came upon it and what needed to be done to transform the car from the dirty neglected mess in the first pic to the impressive, clean, classic waiting to be filled up.
Looks like it was stored with the top down too. Must have taken some hard work getting that interior cleaned up. I wish I could have been a part of it!

Yes, very curious on getting the engine running again after 20 years. What did you do? Quite often people come on here asking about getting a car running again after it has sat for TWO years and the range of effort in the responses is pretty wide.

Car looks great, but I may be biased. Congrats.

thanks for all the kind words!

I figured in this nutty time in the world, a feel good story was sorely needed, and thankfully I have one to share!

I have a history of "finding deals". My best friend from high school has nick named me "the truffle pig".

I was on paternity leave last month and was looking to buy a treadmill. I found one on the Nextdoor App... and arranged to go look at it in the middle of the day. The seller lived on a tiny street off of a major street in the Houston area. There would have been zero reason for me to ever drive down that street.. other than to look at a treadmill in the middle of the day.

The weather that day was gorgeous. As I was driving down the small street... a lady was washing her mercedes in her driveway. I consider myself to be a pretty observant human being.... and I saw the dirty and dusty 911 in the garage. I stopped my car... turned around... and yelled out my window.. WOW! would you consider selling me that car??!!! She said yes. I parked the car... took a look.. we became fast friends.

She bought it from Don McGill Porsche here in Houston in 1995 (no longer there). It was a gift to her husband. He passed away shortly (perhaps 2000 - I didn't ask).... and the car has been parked since. Ran when parked is how she described it.

She asked me to give her a price... I asked her to give me a price. I told her I didn't want to insult her... but it was an unknown quantity at that point... She said the tires got wet in hurricane harvey when water did enter her garage. She did share that her mercedes was parked right next to in the garage.. and it was perfectly fine... clearly it hadn't been run in a couple decades.

My first offer was to trade her the e550 mercedes I drove over there in... a nice car that drives for a nice car that doesnt. She said I was "way off - high".... I finally threw out a number (a safe number where there was zero chance I would get hurt)... and she told me to take 500 off of that and the car was mine.

The weirdest thing... is that moments after we shook hands... a white 3.2 coupe drove down the tiny street...I was floored... she thought it was a sign.

I sent a flatbed the next day and the car was mine.

Towed it to who I think is the best porsche guy around - warren at rennsport. Asked him to get it started an go through it fully.

- drained the fuel tank - replaced the sender
-new battery
- replaced dead DME relay
- removed injectors and cleaned ultrasonically
- replaced fuel pump
- replaced cylinder head temp sensor, speed sensor and reference mark sensor
-flushed brakes
- new tires
- replaced shifter bushings
-oil change
-steering shaft bushing

once it was completed, drives like a damn dream.

Sent it to Jason Cavalo in Houston for a detail... came out really nice. He recommended just a nice detox on the paint and a wash for now. Did a pretty thorough job on the interior.

Will take more pics

Here it is sitting in front of my house.

I have had numerous 911 over the years, and this will join a 997gt3rs and a 993. This is a gift to my newborn son. I hope he drives it to high school
