Default Mixing oil

I have an 86 Carrera with most likely 20/50w oil. As you know these cars burn up/leak oil. I'm out of 20/50w oil. Could I mix in synthetic oil to top it up. I will most likely switch to synthetic oil during my next oil change. Thanks.

I wouldn’t. You want to check the zinc content these engines need. 20w-50 is great. The PO on mine used Valvoline VR1 racing oil. It’s easy to get. I may change after I drain it all to change oil lines.

VR1 is a good choice for its Zinc content. Also, Brad Penn is a good choice. You can get VR1 at any local parts store or BP on Amazon or Zims.

Most people who switch early 911's from dinosaur to synthetic oil say they leak like a sieve forever after. An '86 isn't early, but it's early-ish.

mixing different oils is mixing different additive packages & there is a chance they will not interact well with each other

(I thought the synthetic leaking issue was resolved years ago?)

Anyway, it won't ruin your motor or anything this one time but mixing oils is just a generally disfavored option. Why not use the syn in another vehicle?

Thanks for the info. I guess this is a good excuse to drive to Pep Boys and buy a couple of quarts.

By the way, as soon as you change your oil to a different brand, you are already mixing additive packages because you never drain what's left in your oil lines or oil cooler.

Try not to obsess about it too much since we've all been doing it and it hasn't ruined our engines yet.

Cheers,

Joe

Very true, tho the old oil will have a partly depleted additive pkg. and there is less of it.

Bottom line - it won't kill you or your motor.

Just picked up one of these at the dealership- $13.00. If I were to shell out 6 more dollars I could buy a whole barrel of oil (crude is $19/barrel).
