I am trying to replace the shifter shaft seal at the trans on my 1972 911. I can not get the old seal out .. any suggestions .. do they make a tool for this?

Perhaps put up a picture of the seal you mention ... lots of solutions on Pelican in the 911 section.
If it's the input shaft seal on the gearbox , i used a section of tapered and threaded PVC plumbing pipe which i screwed into the seal and i pulled it out.
Hard to explain here, you'll get more details on Pelican !

So I finally got it! Here is the tool I used . . filed the hook ends down a bit and then it worked like a charm!

Forgot to mention that i purchased a similar tool when i did the head gaskets on my Subaru daily driver, i also replaced the cam
seals at that time ... probably won't use that tool for another while !

It depends a bit on how stuck the radial oil seal is to the case. The VW681 generally works well on small diameter seals. I saw a video, I think linked from the 356 Registry forums, where the Lisle 58430 was used for removing just such a selector shaft seal. Bought one (cheap), haven't used it yet.

When the seal is really stuck, I use a Kukko internal puller and counterstay, rather than gouging the case around the seal. For a shift selector seal, you'd have to remove the cover from the transmission to work it that way. Good luck!
