Default Immaculate SC for 6500

Thought id pass this on. This car is absolutely beautiufl but needs a little attention in the engine. Maybe rings are blowing by? Only $6500. If i was a 911 guy, it would be all over it.

Just curious what you guys think of this car. I'm probably not considering seriously as I'd have to ship it from the Bay Area to L.A.

It sounds like it probably needs a rebuild and the paint(at least the hood and front bumper) need a re-spray. I can't tell from these pix, but I'd guess it has already been resprayed at least once. Plus, the carpet looks pretty faded. Isn't that a $900 price tag for new as-factory carpet?

I ask all this because I am trying to hone my "value recognition" for 911's. To me, it sounds like I'd have to put as much as $8-9,000inot this car to make it what I'd want, and at a total of $14 to 15,000 this car would be a little over priced. Agree or am I all wet?

P.S. It probably needs more than I am suggesting so my figures may be low!

Dan,
i agree with you. I think if i had to put 4-5g into the engine, a 82 sc around 11000 is ok.. not a steal. I can see the paint needs work and interior is not the greatest... I think its a "OK" deal...

Personally, I'd want to talk to the owner and/or get a PPI before making a deal. The smoke could be the rings going, but it could also be the valves needing adjustment. I'd want to know if it's smoking on start-up or during deceleration. With those miles, a rebuild is in the offing but it isn't necessarily soon. The 915 has been rebuilt recently, and that's something.

The paint isn't too bad - it would look fine with the hood and bumper repainted, rather than the entire car. The seats are sports seats and they look to have been recently recovered by a pro - removing the cheap aftermarket floor mats and a good shampoo of the carpet would make the interior show lots better than the pics they did. Otherwise, it's just 2 things, the sun visors have gone puffy and the air vents have a broken vane. The targa top doesn't look to have been re-done recently or professionally judging by the marks at the fold points.

For the price, I'd be willing to take a chance on the car.

Who cares about the paint or a carpet? Its a 911. Itll bring you joy. It costs 6500. It won't cost 5000 to repair if you put some effort yourself.

Considering its age and price...it really is immaculate. It is obvious the car has been well maintained too!

I live in the Bay Area and I am looking for my first 911, maybe I should check this out myself if you guys think it is that good a deal. I just need to get something to get into/start, and would wait for any restoration/repair until I could afford that. But 227k, that's kind of high, isn't it? Or not for this car? Marvin.

If you are mechanically inclined, go for it. If not, be warry and get a PPI.

Serge, This car is an intersting case. But the last adjective I would use to describe it is "immaculate". I guess to each his own. The fact that it's a 911 (to me) means all the more that it should look, well...immaculate.

I am not a fan of the "rat rod" approach, meaning "Who-Cares-What-It-Looks-Like-As-Long-As-It-Goes-Fast". I know some are, I'm not. Since I'm an outsider (944 guy) what is the opinion of this board?

My someday (soon I hope) 911 wil run flawlessly AND look excellent, or I don't want to own it.

Engine work - $4 - $6K maybe more...
Looks like the targa top need replaced or redone - $700 ?
Looks like there is a rust spot or something on the passanger side just behind the door under the Targa emblem $?
Paint - $4 - $5K
Those are the items you can see from the pics, I'm sure there is much more with over 200K miles on the car.
Has the tranny been gone through and how about the clutch? Could be another $3 - $4K..
I believe your $6500 price would soon turn into something close to $20K or more for a car with over 200K miles. Does not seem like a good deal to me...

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

I must agree that "immaculate" certainly does not describe this car...

Good luck!

An engine rebuild, even doing the effort (labor) youself, can easily cost more than $5000 on a 911!

Every 911 is a $20,000 car in one way or another.

Ha, hadn't thought of it that way, probably very true.

Serge, Not trying to be difficult or contrary. Everyone ses thing differently. I had a sort of little "rush" when I saw the post, "Oooh, an immacualte SC for only $6500, I gotta see this".

I may be unique. I am probably older than many (maybe not on the 911 board but certainly on the 944 board) I only intend to buy one 911, so I am being probably overly cautious about what I pick. That's all. "Old man counting his pennies:>)"

I really do hope someone buys this for $6000, it only needs a valve adjustment and he happily drives it for years before having to spend much more. I just can't take the chance. I hope someone saves it from a bad fate.

What's immaculate about a car that needs all that work. Project is more like it.

I have seen this car in person (it is always parked on the street) & its certainly not immaculate! My description of condition would be poor. The exterior is very tired- and looks it from 20' away. I would agree that the sport seats seem to have been recovered well though.

I would think that my car for $12k would be a better deal :

Very clean sunroof coupe with many updates & upgrades performed. I am the third owner. Car comes with toolkit, owner's manual and original service book with dealer maintenance stamps starting in 1982.

Full black leather interior in excellent shape. Leather factory sport seats. 930s steering wheel. New factory rear speaker deck with Porsche factory speakers.

Original paint- a rustfree car. Paint is nice overall, but is pretty faded on roof & has other flaws. Glass seals in excellent shape & leak-free. Black anodizing on window trim wearing thin in places.

Engine runs very strong. Top end rebuild by DM Motors 28,000 miles ago. Current mileage is at 200000. Valve grind. Carrera tensioners. Headstuds replaced.

Recent compression test results (199000 miles): 1-185, 2-185, 3-180, 4-185, 5-190, 6-190

Recent work performed in the past 2 years includes:
-New clutch, clutch cable & helper spring.
-Pop-off valve. CIS injection seals & various other CIS bits replaced.

-Sport motor & transmission mounts.
-7 & 8 x 16 Fuchs in factory finish (not pictured). Kumho 712's at 90%.
-Factory sport suspension optioned car. New Bilstein shocks front & rear.
-930 tie rods. New ball joints. Alignment.
-Optima sealed battery.
-Magnecor plug wires & ignition tune-up. Valve adjustment.
-New MC, brake rotors & pads front & rear.
-All shift bushings replaced.
-Headlights are US-spec H4s (not European spec pictured)

I have owned this car for 2 years & am reluctantly selling (am searching for a pre-74 coupe). The car drives very well & receives compliments in the Porsche-saturated Bay Area. Transmission is tight & very precise. No grinding although first gear should be engaged at rest. Always starts up first-time, although some cold weather CIS idle-hunting for the first minute. A very clean well-loved & unmolested car that has never been tracked, with worthwhile updates.
