Default Good deal? 1989 Cab for 19.5k in Arizona

Been looking at a few local 911's and surfing the web. My latest thing
is getting a cab since I'm in the Bay Area. This one looks good, the
only problem seems to be lack of buyers nearby in Arizona. Comments?

That car is well priced. He's a Pelican fanatic & it has had the right work done.

One for the short list.

Thanks Ian,

I am happy you commented since you have a nearly identical car.
Hello from a fellow Canadian! I was raised in Waterloo, Ontario,
not far from Toronto (now living in the Bay Area). Great web pages
btw, please keep up the good work!

I have been watching this car since it went up for sale & I'm surprised no one has bought it yet. He started a little high but at $19.5K it is great value. I paid $18K for mine in August & I put $2K into it already. Eric's has had all the 'good' work done - valve guides, clutch upgrade, brakes etc. If I hadn't bought already, I would be talking to him.

See if he has a copy of his last smog test and compare it to the California requirements. Are those 50-state cars? If not, it's some hassle bringing it into the state.

They are all 50 state cars. As long as it has not been modified, you should be ok.

Price seems to be in the ballpark. Paint issues and mileage make it not a $20K car - I think $18ish is about right for it. Valve guides being done is nice if it was done right.

Well how would the Arizona car compare to this one, which is local and still for sale?

The Arizona one is obviously a better deal at the same price. The assumption is you can get some knocked off the local car. The only thing that seems dodgy about the Arizona car is the dash crack was repaired. You can do that? The a/c being converted to r134 is nice - that's probably over $1000 to have done. The most important thing is the condition of the vinyl, leather, and canvas. The Phoenix sun is brutal - I've seen vinyl lawn furniture burned brown by the sun in one afternoon.

If you run a carfax on the AZ car, you'll see that it hasn't spent much time in AZ.

I believe it was a midwest car most of it's life, then SF, then AZ, or something like that. It's been around the country a bit, from what I recall.

Anyone seriously looking at cars should spring the few bucks for an unlimited carfax account.

It is a mistake not to do so. Yeah, carfax isn't perfect, but it is a valuable tool for a car buyer. I was able to cross off many, many cars by using carfax - saved me a huge amount of time and aggravation. Huge. I ran dozens of carfaxes. All for $20-something bucks.

Buying a car without running a carfax is very risky. Remember, when you go to sell the car, the next guy probably WILL run a carfax. If you bought the car without it, and it shows 18 past owners, that it has been run through the auto auctions 6 times, etc. etc. you will have a difficult time selling the car.

You DON'T want to unknowingly get stuck with a car with a dirty or undesirable carfax history.

Buyers, don't cheap out on getting a carfax account.
