BBS LM wheels
I'm thinking of getting a set of 17's to replace my 16" Fuchs on the '87.
What widths/offsets should I get?

Jerry - Did you need to roll the front fender for clearance? Is your car lowered?
What size tires do you use? Thanks!

215/45 and 255/40
fender lips are rolled but if at stock US height I think it might be fine. I've been messing around with the front end alot, drove around a little with it very low, no problems, right now it's back to stock height. I'm waiting to do up the rear end before I take it for alignment and balance

The widest you can do is 8's and 10's, pretty much, with 245/275 tires. For that, you need to move an oil line slightly, machine down the head of a swing plate bolt, and roll the inner lip of your fenders. It's not a huge amount of work, but all 911's are a little different, so YMMV.
What do the BBS wheels cost? I have 17-inch 2-piece wheels made with Fuchs centers, which might be an option for you to look into.

Thanks for the replies. JackOlsen: they're not cheap. Around $3500 for wheels and tires. I think they're the best looking aftermarket wheel for late '80s Carreras.

Well, you're right. That's not cheap. But wheels are expensive.
When I had an RS/SC/Carrera-flared car, I ran 8x10x17 wheels on it from Lindsey. If you like Fuchs, it's a cool way to update to wider tires and larger-diameter wheels without looking like an old 911 that slapped on a new model's wheels.
At $2100 a set, they're cheaper than most good aftermarket wheels, and they're aksi lighter than real Fuchs in the same width.

Speaking of wheels in that price range, does anyone have photos of a 911 with 17" Fikse FM-5's mounted? One of my favorite wheel styles, but I can't picture how it would look on the curvatious 911 profile.
FWIW, ask Don Kane at Team Dynamics (US) about any fitments you might have. I picked up some 15lb 17x7 wheels from him for my SHO, under $600 shipped for all 4. Certainly not forged alloys, but they survived very nicely during everyday pothole-infested New England roads, as well as 2 days at Road Atlanta on a 3600lb car/driver combo including an at-speed offroad excursion when a driver spun right in front of me.
I know TD offered some forged wheels too at some point, including some with the Porsche in mind.

I have LM's for street wheels on my 89 and like the look. They are 7 1/2 and 9" wide. I am pretty sure they are designed for the early to mid cars and only come in 1 offset. Got them from wheel enhancement a few years ago. I Would not use them for track though, as they are a lot heavier than my 16" fuchs track wheels, and I can definately feel the acceleration difference.

Peter may have 16x6 / 16x7 ?
Thanks very much for the FM-5 photos, MUCH appreciated (interesting, but I don't think quite the look I was going for).

My track tire/wheel combo is 16 x 7 and 16 x 8. Tires are MPSC or Hoosier. There is a very significant difference in weight between those and the LM's with SO3's on them. I have not bothered to weigh them, but the difference is very noticable when changing wheels and when accelerating.
