Yes, I have a motorcycle c spanner that just needs ground out a little wider and a smaller hook hole. Should I install new shims? Thanks, Ron

Ron: I don't know if using an allen wrench in the end of the shaft might possibly load/harm the alt. bearings, etc. The factory instruction is to use the spanner, so that's the only method that I've ever used.

go for it... i do it the way Pete suggests as basicall I am a chicken and don't want to slip and eat the housing... but the fact you are asking about new shims s positive .. you are already conviced it is coming off... I got new shims because i didn't put them back right and crushed the old ones ( they slipped down as I was putting the pulley on ... but no you don't need replacements, you play with the ones you need with every new belt anyway ..

A couple of small dabs of grease on those shims goes a long way toward keeping them in position!

Moot point now but for what it's worth the allen wrench hole is common on most automotive alternators and it's purpose is to hold the rotor shaft so you can take the nut off. The trouble is if the nut is on really tight you are going to twist the end of that allen wrench off. Look at the size of the wrench on the nut and look at the allen wrench, it's no contest in who's going to win the torque battle.

Just for grins last night after sprayiing the damn nut 3 times with penetrant I thought I'd try the allen wrench and open end one last time. I'm a pretty strong 225 lb boy. Bought a new 24mm socket to use with spanner and an open end 24mm to give one last shot at the allen wrench. No go with an extension pipe on both ends without feeling like I'd break something. Waiting on spanner wrench again. Went ahead and bought all new Rolex nut, Cartier washers, and Bulova shims from Pelican Luxury Jewelry House.

I know what you mean about pelican parts, They do have a great site and forum and tech articles , but boy are they pricey..

something tell me when you crack that nut it will be hot .... PS drape some old towels over those fenders and back area, you would hate to slip and ding something ....

Pelican raised their shipping (on small & medium orders), but I don't find their parts prices all that pricey - generally on the low side tho not the cheapest.

Are there certain parts you're thinking about? Or certain other vendors?
