Default '77 911S - what's it worth?

hello...I have a '77 911S non-sunroof coupe in original condition, 79K miles, blue w/white interior, no rust, motor leaks oil, runs good but blows blue smoke. The car is really solid, but has been sitting unregistered since 2003. I have started the car up every once in a while, however, it is need of a motor rebuild and the brakes, suspension and such will surely need a gone thru prior to getting her back on the road.

Any ideas what she might be worth? Anybody interested? The car is in Madison, Ohio and I would be willing to transport the car with in reason and gas money.

Thanks
T

I can never recommend the 1977 Porsche 911S to anyone. I drove one for over 100,000 miles and had it from new until 1983,--6 years.

Porsche made a serious mistake with the combination of magnesium cases and higher output and pollution control changes to make the 77s a lot trouble to maintain. What you could do with it is to make it into an autocrosser and dump a 911SC engine into it (maybe a 1983). Otherwise you have a lot of work to do on the 1977 case.

It's really hard to put a value on something that we can't see. Post a few pictures and then we can tell you to either walk away or part it out.

I would say 5,000 tops with a motro rebuild and other issues from sitting.

I turned down a 77 911S in mint condition with 70,000 miles. Motor was rebuilt at 35,000 but the Thermal Reactors we're re-installed .
Fresh brakes, new alternator, front cooler upgrade, mint interior, new tires
He was asking $12,000 but I turned it down.

He later sold it 16 months later foraround 10k

Thanks...yea the '77 (2.7) was a poor attempt by Porsche - very weak! I bought the car from the second owner thinking I would either rebuild the 2.7 OR bump in a 3.0L and build a fun little RSR (IROC) replica and drive the **** out of it as a daily driver. I'll try to post a pictures.

I think the '77 is the best investment out there.

Has the car been garaged since '03? I can't see details, like the fenders just below the headlights, or under the rear, lower corners of the back window; I know that you said "no rust," does that statement cover the entire car, including exhaust system fasteners, etc.? What is the history on the paint? Door dings? Road rash? Is the smog pump installed and working? I assume that the car is a 5-speed manual - not a Sporto, correct?

As for "no rust" the body is rust free - it has been stored inside and there are no indications of rust in any of your mentioned locations (typical spots)...the body is really soild and in good shape, no dings, road rash, or wrecks of any kind. The issues with the car is the motor, transmission (i.e., 5-spd with bad 1-2 syncro) and the fact that the car has been sitting for so long. The exhaust is shot and at this point I would make the assumption that the smog pump is not working.

Based on the fact that the body is good...I would think it has potential for either a decent RS/RSR conversion OR simply rebuild the tranny and drop in a good low milage 3.0L.

Thx

I'd say it's worth about half of that. It's a tub with -- by your own admission -- a lot of bad parts.

Paint history? High quality respray? Straight panels? Good gaps?

Any possibility of current hi-res pics of the interior? Seats, dash, etc...

Jack: I didn't want to say anything, but I'm on the same page as you are...

The paint is original and getting thin. The roof is sun scortched, so all in all, it will need painted. Body gaps are right on. The interior is decent, the seats are getting a little worn, but no tears. the door panels, rear deck and carpet are real nice. Dash will need either a cap or replaced. Gauges are all working and nice. I'll try to get a few good pictures...honestly, I figured with the vultures on eBay - she might bring 6K.

You just need to find the right buyer. If you're not in a hurry price it accordingly and see if you get any calls. Where are you located?

I don't mean any disrespect with a $3500 figure. That's what I got my roller for -- but it's a longhood and didn't have any rust, even when it was disassembled and cut up.

But it's true. Good pictures on ebay can add thousands to the selling price (if not the value) of a sports car. And if it runs, you stand the chance of somebody out there thinking they're going to be ahead of the game by putting some elbow grease into a project.

They'll learn, eventually. We all do. In the meantime, you might get 5-6K for it.
