After reading the seller's add'l Ebay note yesterday stating he had authenticated the speedometer using Porsche mechanic, part #, etc..

..well my Bat signal pegged all the way to 'eleven', so I emailed the seller directly last night, asking him if he wouldn't mind if I contacted his P-mechanic independently prior to auction ending...... or alternatively if the seller could post Ebay photos of the speedometer date stamp/ part #.

Surprisingly, he responded (anybody know the mechanic he cites?):

"Good morning, the techs name is Russ Fournier at Naples Euro Sport 239-593-0944. I would not sell this car if I had any doubt in my mind the odo was not correct. Two experts that are interested know that mid year they put this speedo in this model car and they have no problem bidding on this car for at least what you are talking about. I did not take photos but I saw it with my own eyes and I am the one liable for damages selling my buddies car for peanuts. Do what you need to do to be satisfied and then please don't question my integrity again. I am a 30 year veteran selling Porsches and if you read my feedback you will see I have a perfect record. Thanks for your interest in the car."
(end of email reply)

(I did not attempt to contact Fournier, nor did I place any bids).
Starting to think seller believes all of it...I gotta stop tormenting this poor fellow!

Well he said he had several bidders to pay 25k yet the bidding ended well short of there.

I'm not sure what that means, but after decades of being involved with these cars, thats' the first I've ever a seen an '86 or earlier speedo in an '87 and later car, or a claim that the factory made any "mid year" switch.

I own an '89 3.2 Carrera with a build date after the purported 3-89 stamping on the speedo in question, and mine certainly has no white inner circle.

A page from Mark Haab's 1974-1989 911/912E/930 Authenticity Series, which is fairly comprehensive, is shown below.

Also of interest is that the eBay ad showed no photos of the driver's door jamb VIN sticker showing the build date of the car. Maybe just a coincidence.

I'm not questioning anyone's integrity. I just don't think that speedo is stock to that car. It appears to be an OK car, but when one of its chief selling points is the low mileage, what appears to be a non-stock speedo becomes a very big issue.

Caveat emptor, blah, blah, blah...

It's been listed again, with no changes or any mention of the special edition "mid year" speedometer....

This guys a crook and he knows it. I dont care what story he tells about a mechanic looking at the unit or what he claims is scribbled on the back. Where are the buyers who were expereinced collectors and offered him 25k without seeing the car? He told me he had several of them who offered to pay 25k, and they all knew more about these cars then I ever will.

I've been in car business for some time (30+ years) and have seen quite a number of eBay cars and done lots of follow up through personal or trusted 3rd party inspection. I'd offer the following generalization - never never never EVER buy a car sight unseen on eBay, especially a Porsche 911. Why? eBay offers the PERFECT opportunity to sell crap, and hide problems. Sellers do it over and over again on eBay. I would ONLY consider a car found on eBay if you can personally go see the car, or if you 100% trust someone who's local to the car to go check it out (completely independent person who doesn't know seller). There are plenty of Porsche's scattered around the country, be patient and wait until the right one shows up within driving distance that you can go inspect yourself. Another point, you simply cannot judge what a car really looks like from pictures. They always look 10x shinier in pictures than in real life. Cars that are totally oxidized show up pretty well in the right light. I think finding them locally through craiglist, local ads etc. is still a pretty decent way to find a car. Most 80's and older Porsche's had their odometer gear break at some point, mileage claims are generally lies on eBay. Yes, there are legit cars on eBay, and you can generally tell those from the cars with "stories". Carfax can help, definitely check it, if just to get any possible accident history. There are many cars listed with well over 150k miles that the sellers will list with 75k in the ad. I've followed up on several that had well over 250k that the sellers were claiming had 80k.

eBay is the new wild west, anything goes. Don't be suckered. And eBay/paypal really don't give a flying crap what gets sold, or how, as long as they keep raking their millions in listing fees in.

This guy is brazen.
I sent the seller another msg asking why a car DEALER of integrity would be so reluctant to furnish just a shred of visual evidence for us legit. doubters? esp. after multiple, knowledgeable auction observers put him on notice--all in good faith btw--during the previous listing.
I suggested that in an hour's time he could easily add an Ebay photo--

Shouldn't the Florida AG's office get some stimulus money to investigate fraudster dealers like this guy?
