Golly, Loren, if you were allowed on Pelican you'd see this was discussed there several days ago. Guess we're not so brain-dead after all.
What I don't get is that after YEARS of insisting that ALL chips were crap, now you're a supporter of Russell's chips. But Steve's chips are still crap? And it's OK for Russell to infringe on Porsche's copyright, but not anyone else? Your flip-flopping and lack of objectivity really bring your credibility into question, and I don't know why anyone would listen to you on the subject of chips. Quote:

"...pays to have an SC ..... I'm just sayin"
- Right-on! And one of the best comments of this thread - So who cares about another 200cc and more weight. Plus, to get the same effect as a 'performance chip', one just has to use a 13mm box wrench and re-adjust the distributor position. To tweak the AFRs, one just inserts an allen wrench into the CIS distributor. Can't get any easier than that and you control everything. But for some, they love the 'performance chip' hype and/or lack the technical understanding of what they really bought. Bottom line: With the above, there's no mystery nor 'snake oil' from marketing hype, it has a zero cost, and no buyer's remorse about wasting money nor making a bad decision.

Isn't that the point? We don't have the ability to advance the distibutor, so we have to do it via a modded chip. As I've said before, I am taking advantage of some timing advance by running a 100/91 mix. Just filled up this morning at VP on Mission Bay- 5 gallons of 100 to 12 of 91. Since I'm running Russell's "93 tune" right now, I effectively filled up with an average octane of almost 94.
Can't an SC get detonation if one were to take said 13mm wrench, advance the timing and then have the owner go fill up with 87 on a nice hot day?

One of the few that understands, can't say that for those on the 'Dark Side'. Also, since he rebuilt his own engine, he has a high regard for not damaging it, i.e. which few have done including some that write about that!

You admit above that the chip does is the same thing you can do yourself on an SC and is ok to do with an SC. There really is no hype with the chip, it just does the same as what someone could do on an SC with the 13mm wrench. That 13mm wrench could actually be far more dangerous to an engine than the chip. The chip is the only way to adjust it on the Carrera unless you have some insight that you have not shared with us? I know exactly what I bought with my chip and the knowledge and experience that has come with it has been a very rewarding in the driving experience in my car. Thank goodness we have chip tuners such as SteveW and Russell to allow for adjustments and performance equipment changes

I got in on RB's sale and got a 91 chip for my 85 3.2. It's not a huge difference, but it does seem to pull harder in the 2500-5500 range. At the top it's a little hard to tell. I'm at 2300 ft, so I don't have as much 02 to work with as some, but I've never had a problem with detonation, and in fact have run 87 (pre-chip) many times without issue.
