Default exhaust note improvement...

hey looking to improve the sound of my 88 coupe. I hear very good things about about M&k and fabspeed.
Does anyone have any insight on there euro pre-muffler cat bypass pipes set up. What does "euro pre-muffler" mean? Cost is only $300 bucks for this set up, sounds like a bargain, there must be a catch, to loud?
Im not looking for anything to loud or obnoxious. I get enough attention with this car already.
I'd like a natural sounding exhaust, something that sounds like it belongs on the car, something that porsche should have put on this car when it was new.
Does any of this make sense?
I love the way ferraris sound any chance I could get close to this?
Does anyone have any of the above set ups in or around nyc/nj? I would love to come hear it before I spend the money.

thanks. leo

I have the fabspeed one, basically it is a cat bypass but it has some expansion. Yes, it did change the sound. Hard to describe sound however.

Also, look at the used parts forum on pelican, you will see them for sale used ever so often, a good way to save money. Vice versa, if you don't like it you can see used without any issues.

Depending on how much rust you have on your existing exhaust it can be a challenge to remove.

yes, buy a Ferrari! I suspect a 911 is too small to try to stuff a Testarosa flat 12 in there.

I have a straight cat bypass and a B&B single 3" in and out on stock headers/heat exchangers. louder that stock but not too over the top, and a good throaty sound that raises to a wail at redline. with the cat removed you will get more pop/burble sounds when you back off the gas also. I am satisfied with it until I can afford/justify a set of full headers.

issues I know of include passing emission if necessary and having a fitting for the O2 sensor.

I had several bystanders tell me my car sounded better than a number of M5's, 911's, 993's, 997's AND a Carrera GT on a run up Palomar last year. That is with headers and a Flowmaster dual out. Oh wait, you said not too loud. Never mind.

Curious about the Flowmaster. I've seen it referenced elsewhere and couldn't find anything on their site.

Is this a custom build? If not, where can one purchase the muffler?

The M&K premuffler runs lighter and cooler than the stock cat and heat shield assembly. It is basically a light duty muffler, and is about 10 to 15 percent louder than the stock cat-muffler configuration. Buy the M&K - it's manufactured in the USA from high grade stainless steel. You can call the guy that makes them with any pre-purchase questions. Flange and gasket fit is perfect to stock exhaust plumbing. Simple and fast installation.

sig_a: so I have been thinking about this same question and wondered does the M&K premuffler act as a cat (will I still be able to pass emissions?) or is it just a premuffler.

I think I saw that someone (dansk?) was offering a 100 cell cat that would reduce pressure, improve performance and sound but still be able to pass emissions.

Any one familiar with that?

Thanks !

Hi Leo,

What state are you in ...or better yet, how strinct is your state WRT emissions? If you can get away with it, SSI headers add a bit of power and improve tone lots. My SSIs feed into a 2-into-1 Dansk Sport muffler and the sound is glorious! Lovely, burbly idle, and as the revs climb it has a throaty bottom and a crisp "bite" that sounds just so right for a 911, IMHO. And no, not too loud at all ...only mildly louder than stock, I would guess. Or for an even more agressive note and volume, go to dual out muffler, but this requires you to make a small cut into the rear valance. I'm sticking with my single out, but gotta admit the dual outs I've heard sound very nice!! Again, weigh your smog requirements carefully, though.

thanks for the replies guys. Im still wondering why they call it "euro pre-muffler"? So this alone with stock muffler will improve sound a bit?
I am in NYC btw.

thanks, leo

I bought the muffler from Fabspeed a number of years ago with a couple of their tips. Put on locally with elbows to the headers and elbows to the tips.

It was standard on the European-delivery cars where a cat wasn't required. You can sometimes find a used OEM premuffler, and they're really good, or the Dansk part is nearly identical. Fabspeed makes an aftermarket version, but the best has to be the MK premuffler. I bought a Dansk years ago but if I were doing it now I'd definitely get the MK.

Any of the premufflers will change the exhaust tone to be a bit deeper or more "throaty". Not a huge difference but you can definitely hear it. I ran the Dansk with my stock muffler for a while and I liked it.

The premufflers are also preferable to the straight "test" pipes - the premufflers actually make more power than the stratght pipe.

I installed a MK premuffler as well as a Fabspeed one in two out muffler on my 89 Coupe this Summer and i'm very happy with the results...
After more than 7000 kms the sound is not any louder than when i installed and it is very pleasant with the sunroof open !

The MK premuffler captures both cylinder banks with the oxygen sensor "bung" and is a beautiful piece of work and i have to say the same thing for the Fabspeed muffler and it's beautiful oval tips !
You can't go wrong with that combination ,it's always about...you get what you pay for

M&K isn't a catalytic converter, but does include a threaded bung hole to mount your oxygen sensor. We (ohio) no longer have to have our autos checked for emissions, and I don't know about other states. You may want to call the guys at M&K who may have the answer.

The MK premuffler is technically a "cat bypass" pipe... How it affects emissions tests is a mystery to me but since it takes less than 15 minutes to install or remove i would suggest passing emissions tests with the stock "cat" pipe... One of the benefits of aftermarket exaust systems asides from a slight gain in horsepower is in weight savings and i can guarantee that the MK premuffler weighs a lot less and looks a whole lot better than a stock Porsche catalytic converter.
