Cali SMOG questions
I am selling a 1976 Porsche 911S. It was manufactured 04/76, based on the door jam VIN tag. I have two people interested in the car that live in California. What is the deal about the smog emmission testing ??
The car was a "California car" as printed on the Letter of Cert, but has a completely newly built motor (1967 sand cast 2.0L bored to 2.7 RS specs. with 9:8:1 compression. The exhaust consists of SSI's, headers and a GHL exhaust.
Where to go or what to do to check if it can be owned in Cali?

Because it is a '76, it must be smog tested - including a visual to make sure all equipment it left the factory with in '76 is still present. The smog test is on a chassis dyno and it is done at idle and 2000RPM I believe.
I'm just guessing but I don't think they will be able to register it in California. Nevada is in some ways tougher. They test to much later years but only in Washoe and Clark Counties. The rest of the State is 'no-test'. If you register as Classic in those two Counties though, you don't have to test but you are limited to 2500 or 5000 miles a year. I forget which. The Classic plate is on a rolling 20 year schedule.

Won't be smog legal in CA; missed it by one year. 75 and older exempt. 76 and newer must have all the original smog equipment intact including thermal reactors and air pump if the car originally had it. These smog ***** are serious and have all the reference materials to verify engine numbers, etc. Sad but true...
