I've heard of builds of 3.4 and 3.5L, starting with a 3.2 base, but never a 3.8. I think it would be very difficult to make the cylinders that large and still have enough wall strength.

Why 3.8L?

Take a look at the forum "Impact Bumpers". There are a lot of engine build threads on there starting with 3.0 and 3.2L engines.

Whatever you end up doing, make sure you document it here with lots of pics! Good luck.

I would say 3.2 for sure, but 3.8 is big. Twin plug ignition is a must. The chassis you choose to put this motor in will be a factor as well. You may be better served to start with a 3.6 based car/motor. Regardless of the platform you choose, to get the most from your project you will have to address cams, heads, intake and exhaust, as well as transmission type/gearing.

A 3.6L motor would be a much better place to start.

Fit a 3.6 993 engine. Worked for me: the motor in my G50 Carrera runs Motec, makes 308hp on regular 95 octane fuel and gives 30mpg on a run.

Seriously, it will cost you double to convert a 3.2 engine to 3.5 or 3.6 and you will end up with a lot less power and efficiency against fitting a remapped stock 3.6. Then, if 300hp is not enough for you, tuning the 3.6 engine is a lot more straightforward.
