Okay guys after putting very serious thought into my next Porsche over the past several months I now have a clear picture of my dream P-car .... It will be a 3.8 GT3RS grey black w/ red accents. I absolutely love the over the top looks (so does my wife) and IMO, the RS is an utterly special water cooled Porsche. But if I buy the car now, it will be nothing other than a garage toy and will just give me bragging rights and an inflated ego which I am not after.
The goal now is to get a track focused car ... for less than 30K'ish (one that would not be a money pit save for routine items like fluid changes, brake pads, oil change and tires) ... one that I can take to the track for about 10 to 12 sessions per year and learn performance driving so that in about two to three years from now (I figure by then I will be ready for the 997.2 RS) I can feel about about getting a RS and not lose any money on the this track car. Who knows by then I may have the itch for the 4.0 (too bad that I love the grey black w/ red theme of the 3.8 RS)
Thoughts from my family here are always welcome.

I know ... it took me three years but in that time, I got to know the brand, its cherished past, present and future. So no regrets. But I am so excited for the decision I made to myself to learn high performance driving. And guess what ..
I may already have a track car lined up. Any guesses on what it might be ?

I would say your 3.2
Modern cars come and go and this will always be a classic. An all original unmolested car like your are becoming increasingly hard to find. Keep it, love it. Modern cars come and go.
The modern RS (I like the 997.1 RS) is a dream car of mine also, but I just can't justify it given the poor quality of the roads, splitter splitting bumps, and lack of exotic cars (i.e. unwanted attention) in my area.

I absolutely love the over the top looks (so does my wife) and IMO, the RS is as pure a Porsche experience as it gets. But if I buy the car now, it will be nothing other than a rich guy's toy (BTW, I am a high earner but thanks to Porsche definitely not even anywhere close to being rich ... In other words a HENRY High Earner Not Rich Yet). So I know exactly which direction I want to be heading.
The goal now is to get a track focused car ... for less than 30K'ish (one that would not be a money pit save for routine items like fluid changes, brake pads, oil change and tires) ... one that I can take to the track for say 10 to 12 sessions per year and sell in say three years or so (I figure by then I will be ready for the 997.2 RS) and not lose any money on the car. The time comes for letting this track car go when feel that the RS is not too much car for me and by then the prices should be attractive for the RS. Who knows by then I may have the itch for the 4.0 (too bad that I love the grey black w/ red theme of the 3.8 RS)

I know and I can get a 3.8 RS even tomorrow if I trade in my 997 but whats the point if my driving skills can't do justice to even scratch the ability of the car. It will just be an ornament in the garage and I don't particularly care for the bragging rights.
Don't worry my 3.2 will remain unmolested as long as I am the custodian of the car. It is in mint condition both mechanically and cosmetically. I've gone great lengths at preserving it, yet driving it regularly. Just came back today after a nice 150 mile commute over snoqualmie pass ... Wow what a car.
I will tell this though ... the track car I'm looking at has a motor that belongs to the era where the engines were as bullet proof as it gets w00t likes what he hears so far from the seller on the phone and folks here know me well. I will pay asking price for the right car and do not believe in bargaining ... nothing wrong in that but thats just not my style.

I was looking up close at a pre-owned 997.2 GT3 RS and it is something very, very special.
I know sometimes it is uncool to like the newer cars, but that car is terrific in every single way.
It is also a testament to the sweeping increases in productivity that makes it possible to have so much more content in a car like that, for not much more than a mid-80's 911 Turbo cost in inflation adjusted dollars.
