Default what's with Porsche's and oil consumption?

I stole this from the Cayenne sect on the P site......

"I'm monitoring my on my 05 turbo, it uses a lot. I spoke to the service manager and he said this was normal based on how they make the cylinders.

I am using about a litre every 700-1000 miles."

then another guy pipes in and says his manual says that " 1.6 qts of oil may be consumed in 800 miles or 1 liter per 1000 km".???

Now in my old 220k mile oil cooled car I kind of get it but with a water cooled turbo???

Porsche can't figure out how to seal a cylinder?

It has been a while, but someone told me that the early Cayenne models had some type of serious cylinder sealing issue.

The factory did repair a lot of motors under the warranty.

Wish I could be more specific.

YEOUCH!!!!!! Not good news on the Cayenne...

What was supposed to be the reason for the oil spec (usage) on the older Carreras? I always thought that to be a bit troubling (interesting?) ,..so, what was it attributed to?

Carreras and most Porsches, especially the turbos have used piston squirters to spray oil onto the piston skirts in order to help cool the piston, especially in high RPM regimes. That and the way Porsche uses oil to protect the valves and other top-end components some oil usage is "normal." My 85 930 will consume about a quart to a quart-and a-half every 1,000 miles depending on high high I've been revving it. My engine has 97,000 on it now and I also have a few "seeps" from the case which I'll address when I finally tear it down for rebuild/restoration. It's just part of the "Porsche mystique" I've always lived with.
