Default List of repairs to do on a SC/3.2 that you just bought (to make it "done")

Let's say you bought a 1984-1989 3.2 911. It has 150k miles, and you have no idea of the service history. Let's also say you had $100k just burning a hole in your pocket, and you decided you wanted to make the car "bulletproof" mechanically, and replace EVERYTHING that ever goes in these cars. Can you help me make a "worst case scenario" list of all the stuff that can theoretically (within reason) need repair on a 150k car that has never been worked on? Again, the intent is to make a master list (along with ballpark price) of all the things one might need to address when buying a used 911 SC/3.2

Can someone start the list by pasting their "over the top" service history?

You work with a professional to assess the present condition of the car. Go from there. Anything else is navel gazing.

If you're looking to rebuild from scratch, simply put you WILL burn through your hypothetical budget. And be left with a car that doesn't have much more resale that what it's worth now. In that case I'd suggest finding a museum piece, pay the wildly high asking price, and be assured the car will still be worth that on the back end (if not more) unless you turn it into a daily driver.

your post makes no sense. you want to replace everything or within reason, make up your mind.

personally i agree with ken. work with a pro rather than blindly burning through money. when i got my sc i did a hefty bit of maintenance with a list and its on rennlist.

See "the day has come .." thread i just bumped.

No, this is a navel gazing exercise, that serves a few purposes:
1) to gain familiarity with typical 911 issues.
2) to gain an idea of what these things cost to fix

Someone brand new to the 911 world will find it insightful reading,
and give him a chance to research some of the issues in more detail.

I am going to paste a few more lists from some for sale ads. At some point, it will be good to consolidate into a master list.

For what?

Piston Rings
Can only be determined after ring lands are checked and cylinder ovality is within wear spec. Budget for new p/cyl set, be pleasantly surprised if they're not needed.

Euro Headlights and Tail Lights
Certainly not necessary.

Valve Springs + Retainers + Rockers
Why not?

5 Angle Valve Job
Actually, it's a 3-angle valve job.

New Carrera Cams
Why?

Timing Chain
OK.

Timing Chain Tensioners Carrera Hydraulic
Good. Install.

Oil Return Tubes
Not necessary; clean the old ones and install using new o-rings.

Valve Covers Turbo
OK

Oil Sender
Huh?

Cat Bypass
Illegal in states that require smog inspections.

Exhaust
What? Why?

Voltage Regulator
Replace/rebuild alt; usually 1982/83.

Crank Seal
OK.

Flywheel Bolts
Why?

Transmission Selector Seal
AKA shift fork seal. Not a bad idea.

Alternator
See "VR".

Starter
Evaluate by hot restart test.

Brakes
Brake hoses, pads, rotors, m/cyl; replace as necessary.

Transmission Short Shifter & Bushings
Bushings; OK. Short shifter? Personal taste item, but not necessary.

The possibilities are almost endless, but a professional who is well-schooled in the SC "art" can certainly fill in the blanks.

If I had that kind of money to buy an air cooled, I'd spend a little more up front and buy a gem. In the end, it will be cheaper, and it will probably retain it's value better.

The only reason not to do that, is if you want a DIY build car. There again, finding a car with the mods you might want is still a great way to start.

^^^^ Upgraded, or just screwed around with? Not sure what rocket scientist would install a 23/29 set of torsion bars.

(And I guaran_______tee you that 9.9:1 compression on any knock sensor-less 911 engine that sees street gas IS compromising reliability.)
