really really weird
This is a weird situation. My radio is about 90% static until I step on the brake, then it's clear as a bell. When I take my foot off the brake it's static city again. What's up with my1979 911 SC?

that certainly is interesting, maybe theres something electrical you should be looking into, the brake light wiring and the antenna wiring may have intermixed or something. I wouldn't't know.

Here's my WAG: I am guessing a bad ground on your radio. The brake switch when engaged is a ground for the brake lights. I am guessing somewhere in there it is making a better ground for the radio.

Wouldn't a ground problem create an "on or off" scenario? lel048's description sounds more like a reception problem...perhaps with the antenna wire.....maybe it's tangled up with some other wiring and being disloged (forward) when applying the brake.
I know its a longshot, but if anyone has ever messed with the dash / interior wiring to install an after market radio, amp, etc, it's a possibility.
Also, is there a static problem while playing a cassette(or CD), or just with the radio?

the CD player on the stero hasen't worked for a while so that bit of information isn't available. I noticed when I took the stero out that the antenna wire had at one point been cut to a shorter length and then spliced back together and plugged into the back of the radio. I think I'll undo the black electrical tape on the splice job and take a look at it. - Larry
