Now back to my '12 911S: I find it a fabulous GT car. Much more capable than the 997, and 2x more fun to drive.

I (and many multiple gen 911 owners) strongly disagree. The opposite is true.

And FYI, Sport Chrono was offered in '05.

So get Sport Chrono.

Chris M - Don't jump! You'll regret it forever.

Instead, keep your beloved 84 & get something affordable & interesting as a $5-10k daily & family driver. I went for a 2006 Subaru Legacy 3.0 station wagon. My 86 3.2 in GP white/black leather will never be for sale. And even my wife is happy ;-)

My first car was a '76 911, and since that time I've owned multiple different mid year 911's, with the last air cooled one a '72 911 I got 12 years ago. Earlier this year I bought a high mileage 997 Turbo (was looking for a 996 TT but the price was right) and am planning on making it a daily driver. Yes, the 997's are way more refined compared to SC's/3.2's...I felt that when I drove a friend's 993 C2S back when it was a few years old but that's the way they should be. So far, I love them both...the 997 more each time I drive it. Maybe I'm getting old (and fat, barely fit in Pole Positions in the '72) but I like the comfy-ness of the 997, a/c that works (I'm in AZ), and the fact that it's a supercar I can use year round. The air cooled will always have a place in my heart (and garage) but it's not something I want to drive every day or leave out in a parking lot. It is a lot more involved to drive an air cooled car, but a lot more rewarding as well. So to the OP, if you can, do both.

I would like to keep it and get a 997 but I don't have the space unless I get a lift for the garage or something. It wouldn't be a daily, I have a 2016 Tahoe for that. We'll see. I'm not in any hurry.

997at, mausone46: beautiful cars
breaqnaway I've driven water cooled newer mid engine cars and the 'older" air cooled rear engine cars, I always come back to wanting the raw, noise, beast factor of the 'older" cars, there is no substitute, it's the real thing

Hi, everyone - my first post in many years as a user here on this forum. Very interesting thread and one which I will be able to comment on a bit more in a week or so when my '82 SC arrives to share garage space with my '05 997 C2S (that I've had since 2006!) I (still) love the C2S and it's my forever car. The desire for an aircooled 911 has been there for a while, and finally I found a nice Texas car with zero rust and a complete documented history. The car is currently on a transporter from Scotland (U.K.) to my home here in SW France - can't wait!!

Heh heh, great wines, great roads but some very poor drivers here.... I ended up (or will end up early next week) with a 1982 911SC, can't wait.
