Default Replacing rear socks, what else do I need to buy?

I am getting ready to order new Bilstiens for the rear of my '83 SC. What else do I need to replace that is not included with the new shocks? Are there any nuts, bolts, washer or rubber bits I need to order in addition to the shocks?

The new bilsteins come with the top mount hardware, but you have to reuse the bottom bolts which is really no big deal. I always reuse mine.

Do you have Bilsteins now ( front?)...because if you had hydraulics (not gas) before..your rear may sit 1/2" or more higher than before.

Yes, I have Bilsteins front and rear. The car actually is sitting a little low in the rear right now. I expect the new shocks will actually raise the rear up a little. 105K miles on the original shocks, I think it is time to replace them.

Right rear is a pain in the butt. Oil lines in the way so just disconect them. time for your Yoga lesson. On the left is easy. Remove the blower motor. Hope this helps.

If you have Bilsteins now, you can get them rebuilt and custom revalved for about $65ea for the rear and $75 for the front. I have my rears in being redone right now. This is much cheaper than buying new shocks plus in this case you get a custom shock.

Thanks for the advice, Noel. I had not considered that. I guess the car would be down a week or two going the rebuilt route. I have no idea how I would want them valved other than stock. Everything else on the car I believe is stock.

Rear Socks, eh?

You won't need any additional hardware

Don't trust 'Trust Me': Unless you have lower arms like popeye and only a crescent wrench to work with you won't have to remove any oil lines or other things on top of the engine. IIRC, my jointed 3/8 inch ratched did the trick.

the rear shocks have a top stem that takes a special type cheap wrench or a ratchet socket.. Any auto parts store should have the tool.. And before tightning the top large bolt I always align the outer tube as it sits in the rubber to body/ whatever...........Ron
