Default Need advice on 911 purchase

Hi guys,

newbie here trying to buy a porsche 911 in my budget. Hard to come by. I saw this listed by Beverly Hills Car Club (http://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1...upe-c-7063.htm)

Some questions I have:
1) What is the general opinion about these guys? I saw some older threads talking about a shady reputation. Has that changed? They seem to churn through a lot of cars and have more affordable options. Obviously conditions matter and I would do a thorough check before negotiating.

2) The engine seems to be modified and being a newbie I am not quite sure what to make of it. I read up on CIS vs Carburators still not sure if I could use this car as a daily driver and not just for tracks.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

BHCC deals in mostly beater cars, so they always have issues. If you're handy and/or have a big budget go for it, otherwise be careful. Tough decision though, a lesser car in better condition or the one you're lusting after but can't afford.

I have looked at a few cars from them over the years - most I looked at needed work but if that is in your wheel house shouldn't stop you.

A couple of observations on this particular vehicle: ROW car? euro bumperets and VIN tag in door frame looks to be DOT tag. Not sure where you live - If you live in CA, I doubt this would pass smog with carbs and headers on an 80. Looks like some rust on front trunk panel - I would bet there is more lurking elsewhere. Missing fog lights but switch is there

RUN AWAY! BHCC is not reputable. Engine in that car is not original as should be a 3.0, looks like a bad repaint, wiring under the dash looks like a true abomination but thats what they sell. Heres an interesting read on the Bird http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...cabriolet.html

P.S. I don't think they are actually located in Beverly Hills,, they're in Los Angeles, besides they're not a car club either, they are a purveyor of sub standard Porsches. There's a market there, some good opportunities to be had and old P cars shouldn't die a quiet death. You'd just feel better if the called themselves Los Angeles Porsche Liquidators, at least you'd feel better about truth in advertising.

How does an SC lose its drivetrain? Anyone else check out that the clutch release is from that oddball of all oddballs in '75? (Mg transaxle case, too.)

Here's the (likely) '75 drivetrain our friend in the other thread needs.........

No heat, plenty of rust, non-original engine. Maybe insurmountable CARB problems. As always get a PPI if these issues don't immediately turn you away so that you can plan accordingly for near term repair costs.

Run! If they offer it at $24750 it means it's a $15k car at most.

Reach out to techweenie and see if he can hook you up, much better option.

Default Car purchase.

I would definitely pass on this one.

Too many visible issues.

Plus, perhaps others that are not seen.

Be patient & find a nice car.

Best,

Gerry

Check out this 911 at a very well know shop in Northern California. Sometimes you can pay less up front but end up going over budget soon after the purchase. This car if checks out is reasonable priced.

$42,988 is a good deal on an 84??? The OP is looking at a $24,000 high mileage beater, and you offer a $43,000 garage queen. There are so many cars in between $24 and $43 that are better deals. Don't worry about mileage unless you want a collector car. If you want a car you can drive, just look for a high mileage private seller. I would not spend $43 on an 84... Period.

You missed the point. Suppose you spend $30,000 for a car you buy as a better deal and soon after you need to spend $5,000 to $10,000 in repairs versus spending more for a better car. The days of stealing air cooled 911's say from 1978 (SC's) to the 3.2 cars is over. If you find something that is a great deal there is usual a reason, poor condition, not original, mechnical issues etc. You don't need a collector, but higher mileage G-50 cars for example are usually $45,000 to $55,000, I am describing a good driver.

"I wouldn't pay $43 on an 84"....That's what they were saying about 964's a couple of years ago.
