Default SCART Exhaust – Racing Pre-Muffler + Riva Super Sound Silencer

I thought I’d put this together given how difficult finding information proved for myself with respect to SCART products.

I purchased my 1988 Carrera 3.2 last summer. It’s been a joy so far and owing in large to the bad influence of these forums, I have a long list of things I want to change to make it mine. One of the things near the top of that list was an exhaust as I felt the sound from the stock was lacking.

I spent the winter researching the huge number of offerings in the aftermarket. My first priority was sound as while an extra few ponies would be welcome, I thought the noise would be more enjoyable on a daily basis. I found a heaps of videos / sound clips to my liking but kept coming back to a SCART video I found of a 3.2. Frustratingly, I could hardly find any information on this company. Based in France, their primary customer base was not really active in our forums. I saw Pelican started to sell SCART but there was not much to go on.

I waffled back and forth, tried to find a local Customer so I could hear the unit in person, and finally, after some email exchanges with Martin Scart himself, decided to be the brave first owner of his exhaust in Canada. Not hard, as Martin seemed genuinely interested in my satisfaction with the product. I ended up ordering the Racing pre-muffler and Riva super sound muffler.

Less than one week later I came home to a big box on my front porch. I decided that since there is so little information here I would document the unboxing, product, install and of course, the new sound. Hopefully it helps anyone on the fence in future.

The box faired pretty well given its voyage.

Some Euro packaging material. Fun…not bubble wrap fun, but the cat liked it.

The Riva Super Sound muffler. I didn’t think it was going to be polished from the pictures but it works. I would have probably spec’d the raw finish had there been a choice, but I didn’t ask and it’s under the car.

Flange; welds look good but I know nothing of welding so I’ll let those who do make the call.

More tip; you can see the polished surface is a little rough on the transition to interior surface.

Overall, quite pleased with the product so far. Not much to compare to save my previous Honda / Acura products. Surely more pleased than I will be with the 29 year old bolts holding the current exhaust in place…

I'll be doing the install this weekend.

always liked the sound this exhaust made on older cars so curious to hear it, as far as the welds they will do the job but not the prettiest. Enjoy and looking forward to the music it makes

Default Hand welding

Hi,

Our welds are made by hand without oxygen, may be not as pretty as a weld made by a machine but much stronger with a 10 years guaranty.

Not attacking your quality of welds just use to seeing a few friends weld and they are like artists. Love your exhaust and the sound they produce .

Default SCART Exhaust – Racing Pre-Muffler + Riva Super Sound Silencer

OK I understand,

When you turn the key in real life, the sound is even better than on the video.
In France there is more than 5000 Porsche equipped with SCART, so nearly everybody knows our exhausts and how they are sounding. I happy with this first 911 3,2L with SCART exhausts in Canada because on my point of view, Pre muffler racing and SCART Riva silencer is the best you could hear on this car. I'm sure Scott will have a great fun. This is THE best choice.
I looking forward this weekend too to hear his feedback

Using my bathroom scale:

Muffler = 17.4 lbs / 7.9 kg
Pre-Muffler = 6.4 lbs / 2.9 kg
Hardware = 2.2 lbs / 1 kg
Total = 26 lbs / 11.8 kg

The SCART website only lists weight for pre-muffler which they peg at 2.9 kg, so I'd say these are reasonably accurate.

The weigh is mainly a question of durability. When we do a "Sport exhaust", we are focused on efficiency, sound and durability. Our goal is to make a long life for our exhausts.
When we do a "Racing exhaust", It is 100% efficiency and light weigh, the sound and durability aren't a focus. We can do super light muffler, but you'll have to change its every few years.

Finally have the exhaust installed. Had a very difficult time removing the old components but I suppose 29 years and 190,000 km makes for a tough nut to crack. I finally had to break down and take it to a local shop. I’m between garages and it’s not easy working in the dirt!

Talked about the install with the owner; he said it went smooth. He was quite complimentary of the build quality and thankful for the slotted holes in the muffler flange. He mentioned most do not have this feature and he wrestles a lot to get them fitted properly.

I need to play with the centering of the exhaust and the height right to left. The shop squeezed me in short notice and didn’t have time to fiddle about. After poking around I’m quite sure I’ll get it perfect.

I’ve put about 100 km on it now and all I can say is WOW! A ton of character. Idle is burbley with little barks here and there. That sound continues at low revs but when you get on it she changes tune, more high pitched with little rasps in the 3800-4200 rpm range. It’s loud but there is a sweet spot under light throttle at regular driving speeds where normal conversation is easy. Wife even agreed! Also, it’s heaven in a tunnel; very 70’s Lemans racecar. Love it.

Haven’t had time to take much video, just a quick startup. Will post more in the coming days.

Anyone local wants to hear just drop me a line; videos don’t do it justice.

Need to play with alignment a little:

Thank you for your write up. Looking to add the silencer only (on my 86 cab), would that end far from your installation sound?

@theiceman Did you end up installing a Scart muffler on your SSI? I'm looking to do that, and would love impressions, videos, etc
