935's or 917s
Hi
Visiting from the 993 board.
well after visiting the Monterey Historics and seeing some of these cars, i've decided i don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about the 917 variants when they could be paying attention to the 935 variants.
the late 70's Kremer cars are really really sexy.
is there a coffee table book of 935s similar to what we see on the 917s?
any good reading material discussing the development of these cars?

it was cool watching Rusty? / Randy? win for the second year in a row.
I was ~ 3ft away from him as he climbed out of the car and pulled off his helmet after beating Bruce Canepa and the Dakon Monzas.
his face was flushed with VICTORY!

A magazine called Auto Aficionado did a great piece on 935s etc.in the Jan/Feb 2008. Great PCS and interviews with guys like Busby. Also gives insight into how Americans modified the cars once we got them from Porsche(including wheelbase alterations---as in funny car). Also , interesting transition from RSR to 934,934.5, to 935.
The mag is out of biz and automotive quarterly is selling back issues. Worth looking into though.

That was the best Monterey weekend so far- you cant go wrong with Porsche the featured mark. I love the 935 cuss underneath all that outragous bodywork, you can still see a 911. But did you see the Rolex Moments in time Display: the 917, GT40, and Ferrari 512 gave me goosebumps. The link is my 930 in the monterey tunnel during that weekend- look at 6:05. could you imagine a 935 doing that?- the ceiling would fall down

Having owned and raced a number of porsches and other race cars over the years including that red beast pictured above, I can say that there is no experience like driving a 935 in anger. Bob's Fabcar 935 was by all accounts the best handling one ever built and was a dream to drive. He was the one who coined the phrase that "you can't make a racehorse out of a pig but you can make a damn fast pig". Just contemplate the raw stats:
2100 lbs. carbon/Kevlar body
twin turbo rear engine
836 hp with "normal" boost
4 speed transition
LOCKED rear end
19X14.5" tires on the rear (I use one as a coffee table in my office)
clocked at 218 across the start/finish line at Daytona.
(We calculated that the car could do over 230 given proper gearing and a long enough straight.)
This car was faster then the 962's on the straights, unfortunately, their ground-effects devoured it in the corners. Had the car been built nine months earlier and competed in the entire 1983 IMSA season, it would have walked away with the Championship. Of all the race cars Bob owned and raced over the years, besides his Cooper Monaco, that was his favorite. When I drive my wife's stock Guards Red '89 930, I can really feel the family lineage. Her license plate is 930 LADY in honor of Bob.
It was a real privilege to have owned, raced and especially known Bob over the years. Both he and that car were the best of the breed.

Todd, GREAT to hear from you buddy - my I bet you have some stories we'd all love to hear. There's just something to the 935 that gets my blood going, and every time I crank up the Blackbird, albeit a 935/76 tribute car...I can feel the history and the passion that went into the ones raced in anger.

If you're in H-town or NC soon, hell even in FLA in Feb you'll get to see my car...which btw is undergoing conversion to the below photos currently....with the same rockers as used on the Jager K3 above:
