Default '87 930 engine install into '77 911s

After my BAE turbo caused piston failure I decided to pick up a 930 engine for it's stronger bottom end.

I don't need more than 275 hp and prefer to drive twisties instead of trying to hit 150 mph.

That said, I'm planning the install and wondering what challenges will need to be met.

The 930 engine did not come with a Lamda computer.

With these goals in mind, I hope to use as many of my original systems as possible.

If not, who can help me build a list of parts, such as...
1. Different oil lines? (I have a front oil cooler already)
2. Different fuel lines? (I have purchased a Bosch 044 as a rear pump)
3. Different wiring? (I have an MSD 6-AL installed with boost retard)
4. Different clutch parts? (I have a Kevlar clutch already on my 925 trans)
5. A Lamda computer? (the 930 engine didn't come with one)
6. To reduce the complexity and achieve my detuning goals, should I consider using the 2.7 CIS system, the BAE turbo, and SSI exhaust system? I'm thinking of setting the rev limiter at 5200 RPM anyway.

All I want is a very reliable lightweight for the twisties, with a good torque curve and a power-to-weight ratio similar to modern cars. I'm not looking to run any 1/4 mile runs and I want to be gentle with my 915 transmission.

I don't know about what you might use from the old engine to the 930 engine but from your description about how you want a low rpm engine with a lot of torque you ain't describing a 930 engine. On most normal 930's the torque begins right at 3000 rpm and continues up through 6000. There are some things that you can do to lower the torque curve but they aren't cheap. The other thing is the 915 tranny. The lower you drop the torque curve the more strain you will place on it. There are several threads on this site and over at Pelican that might help you understand where the weakness is in the 930/915 hookup. One last thing, and that is the turbo is for all out fun and yes ***** to the wall is part of it, but trying to treat it like an Alpha Romero where you have to row the gear shifter constantly to make it run is a waste. Before you get into your wallet get someone to let you drive their 930, "Twisties" and all, and see if it meets your needs.

Agreed.

I've driven a few 930s and will be happy with the 915 gear ratios and 3k-6k pulls.
My point is that I'm not looking to build a powerhouse, and that I might even de-tune the engine a bit.

Thanks much for your insight.
Your concerns are valid and I'm carefully metering the wallet accordingly.

Lucky for me, many used parts can be used to acheive my goals because most 930 enhancements are all about triple digit speeds and acceleration.

Same project.

The oil tank is different as well, it has two extra lines compared to my stock one (I'll snap a pic tomorrow when it's in my hands). I also have a 915 tranny but not sure of the clutch parts right now but I can find out tomorrow. The 915 is not the ideal tranny for the conversion but for me, will do for now. Be careful in 1st and 3rd gears especially. Rear fuel pump requires a new rear relay and fabricated lines. No lamda but use the 930 wiring harness.

Here's a pic of the new rear fuel pump mounted. Man I gotta get that underside cleaned up before the engine is ready to go in.

I'll get you more specs on mine as soon as I can talk to my mechanic.

Some pics of the old (dirty) 1982 non turbo oil tank and the new turbo one. Notice on the old one you can see the (2) impressions of where the openings for the lines would be on the new tank. Also in the enging/dirty tranny pic at the back of the engine you can see a new oil lin that runs from the right side to the left and attaches to the oil tank. There are two extra openings in the new tank. One you cap and the other for the line.
