Default Just bought an 87 930

Love the car but I cant get it to pass Texas (dallas) emissions. The car had a full PPI and passed with flying colors. Emissions says the carbons are too high and the car had the CATS removed years ago. Any ideas on how to get it to pass emissions?

Also - this baby is extremely cold blooded when you first start it. I have an 87 Targa which starts on a dime and drives perfectly immediately. This has been my biggest suprise - until the engine is warm its a dog to drive. I took it to my local garage (Dallas Euro Cars) and they didnt have any great ideas. Is this normal?

With my '87 it would spit a few times when cold but had no problem when pushed even when cold. There is a warm up circuit that may need to be checked on your car. My car also had no cat on it and I had no trouble with emissions. One technique that I always did just before the test was to run the car very hard on boost and then swing into the test area for a quick a test as possible. I was told that the exhaust system got so hot that it burned a lot of the gases that caused the test to be a failure. If you have ever seen a turbo at night after a hard run you will understand. They get white hot! I cannot say if it was true but I never failed a test. Good luck.

WELCOME

Nice looking 930 and those wheels rock. What do they expect from a 24 yr old car for crying out loud? IMHO, emissions testing is a waste of time & resources

You should move to a state/county w/o emissions tests if possible

Problems like those you identified are common symptoms of CIS running lean and usually will be manifested during cold start when the system demands rich mixture. A vacuum leak will throw the cold start cycle off and result in difficult start-up. A lot of owners and sometimes even mechanics make the mistake of adjusting the fuel/air mixture at the fuel distributor rather than fixing the air leak. When the engine does warm-up and other components of the system lean out the mixture you'll get an irratic idle.

First look at the easy things for air leak IE orange gasket on IC at Throttle body. WUR, AAV.

Once you get that handled have the CO adjusted and see if you get emmissions done. with out cat if not look around for a used cat.

dfwporsche, Are you selling the car on Ebay? I know you just bought the car.
I just want to make sure someone else isn't using your car information and post a fake ebay ad....

I doubt you will get that car (or any car) to legitimately pass emissions in TX with no cats.

'87's should only have to pass safety now, I wonder why they are doing a sniff test.

That is good to know. After which year is the emissions test a requirement?

Not sure why it showed up as 4WD. Obviously a mistake. It did pass Texas emissions with no cat. I decided to sell for financial reasons so it was indeed listed on ebay.
