Default '83 930 "barn" find..Opinions

Hey guys, I found this abandoned 930 which in this part of the world does not happen every day. It is difficult to get a 930 into the country given a 5 year old import ban on cars older than 7 years.

The car seems to be a US Spec 930 based on Vin, it was a project that got started and never finished. The owner has the original fenders. I have not seen the car yet as I am traveling, however it seems that engine runs with no issues, paint has been recently done, brakes and suspension. Obviously the interior needs a lot of love.

Whoever has removed that dashboard probably to put Euro gauges has screwed it up. Carpet could be recoverable with a good cleanup and the rear seats /firewall mess (not shown here) should not be a big deal...
Am I being overly optimistic and about to get myself into a deep hole?

I don't like the wheels or the fenders, and would change them for Fuchs and stock. I am wondering if they have stripped it completely for a color change.. sI would like to check the original color however I am sure the sticker is not there, any other way to know?

Opinions are welcome. Price might go down to 15k usd. Cars here are generally quite more expensive than the US, and a 930 cannot be imported until it is a classic (30 years old) + would need to add $7k USD of duties.

Recaros C, dashboard and door panels might get an Alcantara treatment and should look nice.

Um...930's were not imported into the US in 1983 so it cannot be a US spec. car, unless it was "Federalized" thru modifications & inspections through the Dept. of Transportation.

Mark, good point, thanks.

The guy said it is a 1984 but when I checked the VIN numbers that he sent me ZZZ93DS000560 (obviously missing the initial WPO) and it is a 16 digit VIN, not 17 which all ROW cars had, I concluded that it was a 1983 US per this:

Note the two littles asterisks at the bottom.. There is no "Z" digit on this VIN.

Am I mistaken?

There were no US Spec 930s from 1980 though 1985, so if its an 84 its not a US spec car. As Mark mentioned, any 1980-1985 930 would have to have been modified/federalized to meet US specs.

Best regards,
Dino

I didn't know that Beirut had barns...

Haggle the seller down a couple grand and buy the sucker. Who cares if it's a US car or not (apparently not). It can always be sorted out to your liking. Buy it and drive it through the desert like you stole it and be the only one on the block (or perhaps the entire country) that has one.

Thanks for the comments. I guess I will have to check other VIN sources to understand this discrepancy.

I will check the engine S/N as well for more clues. Car is on its way for inspection. Unfortunately I have not seen the car yet, I will travel there tomorrow morning and check it personally.

TTSurgeon, there are pics posted here, are they not showing?

Mark It does not make any difference whether it is US or not, just trying to find out. The car needs some work it seems... If engine and Trans are excellent, it will be a good buy.

Oh.. and not much of a desert in Beirut!

Ha...please excuse my ignorance! I'm little traveled beyond experiences in South America and flunked geography in school. Beirut to my limited brain is Middle East'ish, and middle east is sand. Thanks for the correction

Hope you get all the info you're looking for. Do post some picts of the car (your shot at what....15,000 feet....is gorgeous though!

Hi Jean - Wow ..cool find, looking for some love and saviour! I hope that is you. You would be the perfect person to own this car and transform it to its once former glory (you have the knowledge, passion and of course $$ ).

Your pics make it look like foliage from the mid-west or north east U.S! So I am not sure which country the car is in, I take it you travel alot.

If I stublmed across a cool car like this, it would be kill me, as I would want to save it and rebuild but being a regaular working schmuck, do not have the funds to support such an undertaking.

Good luck and living vicariously through you. Hope you buy it Jean.

I looked up the VIN you provided, and according to Porsche, it is invalid...

Not a good sign...

On the other hand, I almost don't mind the fenders and front bumper. Looks neat...

Is that a DP engineering kit?
