Possible 930 Purchase
Opinions needed here. I have finished my soul searching on what I want to do next. There is an 88’ Euro spec 930 numbers matching car with FSH near where I live which has just had a complete engine rebuild by a reputable P-car specialist shop and has ~94,000miles on the clock, completely stock original interior, only issue is a PO has installed an OE 993 body kit and Turbo Cup wheels. Don’t get me wrong the kit is very very good and suits the car to a certain degree but and it’s a big but it is not original to the car.
With the way 930 values are headed it seems like a good deal however the seller is asking ~$45,000 which is a bit steep considering it is not original in appearance. I have checked Hagerty values and they place a condition 3 car at $57,800, however I would grade the car as a 4 based on the body kit and wheels being non stock and that puts it in the $42,000 range. Given that I would need to find front and rear bumpers, sill plates, rear spoiler and OE Turbo fuchs will require an outlay of cash as well and to me that’s at least a $2 – 3,000 hit straight away. I have as yet not seen the car and would have a PPI done before making an offer. The car is fine for now and useable but I would definitely restore exterior to original spec and I would be right at $40,000 for this particular car would anyone disagree?

If the car was never wrecked and the motor work fresh your pricing plan is probably reasonable.I do think you are underestimating the cost to take it back to stock.

I very much agree that you are likely under-budgeting the costs to convert this car back to original configuration.
I noticed you posted this same question on Pelican under 911 Technical, you may want to consider moving it over to the 930 Turbocharging forum.
Your location says; Cape Town, South Africa. Unfortunately I have no idea what the 930 population is like in South Africa. I also do not know what import/tax regulations apply to your country. These factors make it harder for me to best asses your situation.
Best Luck in getting a 930. They are very special cars.

Thanks for replies guys and yes I probably am underestimating cost to return to stock, but I already have a lead on a rear bumper, spoiler, sill plates and a few other goodies from a good friend of mine so should get those parts reasonably cheap. As far as the local market goes there is one more for sale which is an 82 with about 28,000 Kms all original but that going for around $80,000 so way beyond my budget. I would do the majority of the cosmetic body work myself so would only be looking at paint which depending on if the car is originally guards red would not be too expensive but then if it needs color change that's another story. I have made the offer on $40K just waiting on a reply. Import regulations preclude me searching elsewhere.

For what it's worth,
A complete perfect set of stock Fuch's will set you back at least $1500 [then tires as well}, a complete stock front bumper with 5mph accordion pieces is another $1000, the lower front valance is $400, the lower front rubber piece is $400 as well. A perfect rear engine lid with "tea tray" is another cool $1000 at a minimum. Rear bumper complete with lower extension panels & 5 mph accordion pieces will net you another $1500.
Then there are the front turn signal housings & lens, rear rubber impact ****, gaskets, brackets, etc.
You could get good used items at a slightly lesser price tag, but then they would need to be refurbished, so.....
Then there is paint, so what you have here is a very pricy endeavor to bring the girl back to stock.
Just my .02 worth.

Burning Brakes
Assuming the car in question is the red on epictured - it has an OE _964_ Turbo body kit - not 993. Which looks darn good (of course I'm biased except for the front splitter and big rear spoiler. But thats my opinion...

Well the offer was turned down he is sticking firm to $45K, given the money required to bring back to stock I am passing on this one. I am now back to the 2000 GT3 which I originally looked at. Just so much junk out there which is represented as a 'good' car. I really dont want another project as I just spent the last 5 years fixing up my old one. Have another project for this year anyway so I am going to go for the GT3.

A proper 930 is a classic and always will be. Sorry to hear that your deal did not work out but I think you made the right decision passing on that one. GT3's are nice cars and I wish you the best times with it.
