Question Opinions Please~ 914

I am looking at a decent condition 1975 2.0. I have the resources for a full restoration of the car both cosmetic and mechanical, and I am considering a Gulf-Racing paint theme. I've always loved the blue and orange of the GTU Racing 911s and 917s and think it might look pretty retro done on a 914. I'd leave the top black and possibly the bumpers, but that would be about it. Has anyone seen this done and/or have pictures other than CG? Think it would make a good looking driver?

Personally, I wouldn't drive around town in some suedo-boy-racer-'70's-Gulf-Racing knockoff; too many ricer drift-squad wanna-be's covering those bases as it is. Maybe for vintage racing, but not for the street. Maybe reconsider a 914-6 GT or 916 theme?

But hey, it's your car; do what you want.

Have to agree with Rouser even though my spec Miata race car is painted that way- but heh, it's a race car. With those god awful '75 bumpers it wouldn't look all that great anyway. If you're doing a complete restoration, retrofit the earlier bumpers for a better look anyway.

It would just be the paint scheme, not the numbers and sponsors all over it like the "boy racers" you pointed out. I thought about the 914-6 but wanted something done less, and I'm not really interested in a clone of one.

I do definatly agree that the earlier bumpers would look better though. Either in Martini or Gulf guise.

I wanted to go the Gulf Blue theme too, but decided it was too much of a "in your face/racer" look and I did not have big old flares either. Just went with a orange Porsche decal and somewhat minimalist but still a little classy (Olympic Blue btw).

Looks great, but if you're painting it anyway why not take off those god-awful front side reflectors? Those were the first thing I got rid of... what car colour is Olympic blue, looks similiar to Gulf blue.

I agree that the deletion of the front reflectors would make a cleaner line but I prefer the stock look; to each his own I guess. The car pictured was repainted in its original 1974 factory color (Olympic Blue) in June and it was so close to Gulf Blue (which is actually a little lighter) I was considering some orange highlights but decided not to for the reasons already discussed.

Car looks great Tom, thanks for the picture. I gotta say I don't mind the refletors either. Sure they break the lines of the fender but I like the totally stock look. Definatly just depends which direction you plan on going with the resoration

Absolutely beautiful Plympic Blue 914. The Fuchs go well with it.

They look like 911 Fuchs. The 914 had silver & black spokes.

I have a set of Carrera wheels on my 914/6 and the rear fenders get a bit hot when I drive the S**t out of the car.

Yep, they are 911 Fuchs - 6x16 front and 7x16 rear. I stretched the rear fenders to preclude a problem like yours.
