914-6 3.4L Race Car bought!
For the past 20 years I have been wanting to build or find the right 914. A 914-8(Renegade), 914 STI , a converted 914-6 or a stock 914-6, but all along I knew from my past history that I would start cutting and chopping as soon as I got the car. I am a former Lotus owner obsessed with weight loss(the car, not me). I did look at the Patrick Motorsport 914's and absolutley loved them,(nice work there) but I am not a rock star or Hedge Fund Manager. I found a guy on the east coast looking to sell his fully built car with a fresh 3.4L in it. The car should be arriving here in Walnut Creek in a week or so!

It will mostly be a DE car since I know from my former Flat Track days that if I were to race it I would end up in divorce court.

Must admit I've never seen your car at any event and I've been as far west as topeka, south to sebring and north to mosport. All PCA and SCCA events. Perhaps it was in vintage which I only participated in a couple of times.
Anywho, regarding your question about the tranny and gears.
One of the nice things about owning a 901 tranny is the almost unequaled selection of gears.
Each had a letter starting at "A" and ending with ZD. without checking I think each letter of the alphabet is represented with variations such as "HA" and ZD for example.
gears in the lower alphabet where intended for lower gears 1-2 while the higher alphabet gears where generally for 4-5 th with many in between. depending on the use of the car , street vs track gears are selected accordingly. 2nd gear was usually captive to the shaft unless you paid big bucks for a 904 mainshaft which allowed the use of any 2nd gear. Some gears could also be flipped thus changing their ratios and position in the gear box.
Learning to change gears is a challenge, at least it was for me but having the right gears for a particular track can pay great dividends.. Some folks like myself had two boxes, one for short tracks like Lime Rock and another for perhaps Watkins Glen.
As you can see the sky is the limit. Generally speaking, the 8:31 R&P is preferred and is more stout then the 7:31. Swepco is the preferred oil while synthetics should be avoided since the synchro's like a certain amount of friction to operate.
You've got a decent outfit out west called CMS who specialize in Porsche trannys and can probably be a big help. WEVO is a company making high end specialty pieces for Porsche gear boxes should you be so inclined.
As you can see by my current ride I've gone off the deep end. I've owned a variety of 914's mostly 4 cyl and at one time owned a factory built 914-6GT , the #50 which won the GTU class in the 1971 24 of Daytona.
Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.
Even sometimes plain and simple moral support can be beneficial when owning a 914. They can test your patience but generally give a decent ROI.
Regards

You got a fun car there.
Tom, Jay, skl , Bob .... help ....... I keep hunting around for one of these but with a different twist . I would like it to still be street capable (legal - barely) as I wanted to doll it up and run the Texas 1000 Rally and maybe maybe cart it to Newfoundland one time for the Targa Newfoundlnad Rally . And for my purposes the car has to accomodate a driver and navigator inside . But I never see one in the Porsche monthly mag, PCA, etc so they must be a who you know kind of car.
Any of you have any input if I am way off base on this. Or just not at the right place.
It is either that, and my 951, or I go down and get that new lime greeen Go Daddy Mustang 302 Boss from the local Ford dealer.
