Default RUST Shocking!

Doing the final strip down of my 86 951 and was shocked to find this rust patch on both sides at the top rear of the fenders.
Whats most surprising is that the undercoat on these cars is outstanding, just look at the thickness at the bottom of the rusty spot, it's about 3/8" ,
looks like water gets in from the top and sits there, eating through the galvanization.
This car also spent half of it's life in CA.

That's why the day after I got my P-car, I went to Krown Rust Control, the firm that gets the best ratings around here. Our cars are built better than any others in the world, but nothing's perfect!

It looks like that was a weld spot to me. Paint over that weld. anywhere welded will rust like you've never seen before.

I think it's where water sits on top of the joint, eventually getting under the undercoating.

tire rub could cause undercoating to get burned off... (just an idea if you have a modifed tire setup)

this is between the fender and the bulkhead at the top, under the windshield, no tires involved .
