Spring color code ?
Hello all...on my 83' Callaway I am curious of the pound rate my front springs are. They look relatively new and are black like my 200# Weltmeisters on my 84' 944, and they have the decreased spring coil gap as the spring winds down to the bottom of the strut housing. But something that I did notice was that on the last few coils there was 1 green block (rectangle) painted on 3 of the coil windings except for the very last coil winding before the spring stops. I did not notice this on my 200# Welts and I have failed to see any type brand name on the winding like my Welts have.
Anyone have any educated guesses???
I know Porsche uses yellow dots, gray dots, and if I am not mistaken white dots as well to distinguish their spring # rates...not sure about these. Is there any method for taking the coil diameter and the spring's cylindrical diameter and total coil spring height to figure out the rating? They are not progressive springs due to the coil diameter remains the same everywhere.
TIA!

I've even heard of blue marks, but I don't remember green being on the color list. FWIW, I have 3 dots (I forget which color, white maybe) and they are in a row on a single coil, not one on each coil.

I would suppose they are maybe aftermarket and were marked by the mechanic who installed them. Per the factory manual, and as Dave states they are marked from what I've seen on one coil:
944 early and 924S - 1 to 3 blue dots
924S and 944 up to end of MY 86 with M030 - 1 to 3 red dots
944 as of MY 87 - 1 white/1 blue or 2 white/1 blue
944S standard shocks - 1 to 3 white dots
944S with sport shocks - 1 to three yellow dots
944S2 with standard shocks - 1 to 3 purple dots
944S2 with sport shocks upt to MY 89 - 1 to 3 turquoise dot
944S2 with M030 - 1white/1 yellow or 2 white/1 yellow dots
944S2 with Turbo suspension - 1 to 3 beige dots
I don't have the 951 color codes in front of me, sorry.

I will have to clean them up a bit more and do some more searching. Is there a method to or EG to tell what the spring is rated at by measuring the coil diameter, coil's cylindrical diameter, coil to coil gap, and height of spring??

Some of the spring color coding info is in the Work Shop Manual, and some is in the Models, Dimesnions, Tolerances booklet.
OEM Porsche springs have paint marks on ONE coil. for example, the springs in my former '84 had 3 Blue dots which puts them in the 145# to 149# range.
Here is an excerpt from the Models,Dimension, Tolerances booklet, page 69:
"The coil spring designs differ with respect to length and spring hardness (spring rate). They are identified by blue, white-blue, and red color markings.
Spring rate 21.8 N/mm (wire diameter=12.0mm): Blue Springs
Spring rate 24.1 N/mm (wire diameter=12.3mm): Red Springs
Spring rate 28.0 Nmm (wire diameter=11.7mm, partially 12.2mm): Red Springs.
Each spring design (blue, white-blue, and red coding) is also subdivided into two or three tolerance groups (tolerance of the spring rate= +- 4%).
If memory serves there is similar information in the WSM.
