Should I worry about the scar?
I dissembled my 944 rear axle to regrease as an attempt to debug some rear popping noise last HPDE session. (no problem when street driving). When I take the axle apart, I find this:
this is the center piece from the right axle closer to the transmission side. the ball bearing all seems smooth and okay. The carrier seems allright too. only the center piece. Is my rear axle a goner? How those mark happen?

Race Car
Looks like area is inside thrust or decel travel of the ball, so, yeah, I'd probably ditch it, or at least carry a spare when you DE.
Could have been a contamination in the metal from time race was formed.
It actually looks like somebody was welding something on the car and the welder ground clamp tried to use this as a path to ground.

Drifting
i would replace all 4 CVs with GNK/lobro but you can buy more time by switching the inners from side to side.
being on the side of the road isn't fun.
pitting comes from stretching the material surface from lack of lubricant.

thanks for the confirmation. I will replace them asap. meanwhile I will reverse the joint for now just to buy more time next week. Hopefully it will last 5 laps on a Time Trial and one week of commute (my other car has a broken AC! )...
I search around, unlike the late 944, early 944 only have CV joint kit opposed to the whole axle. Thought early 944 is cheaper in parts!
Can I buy a late 944 axle or auto axle and swap out just the joint? Looks like thats cheaper option than just buying the CV joint kit, even with a new set of c clips...

Not an inexpensive option, but pretty well bullet proof.
