Default Tracking down a car's current owner

Is there any way to find out who currently owns a car that was previously owned by yourself? My wife had to sell her first car, a Porsche 944 S2 years ago and I would like to see if it's still on the road and could be purchased.

My only thought was to check the carfax first to see when it was last registered or serviced and where.

Any other ideas or past experience?

Post the VIN. It might be my car or another member here, you never know.

I added the VIN to my Carfax garage and it gave me some more info. It was last registered on 3/22/2018 in New Jersey. It also showed a service record in NJ, but back in 2011.

Nope not mine. The current registration is a good sign it's still alive. Tell us more, like the year and color. Someone here may know the car if even if they don't own it. The S2 community is small. Post your message over on the bird site and 944online too. Good luck with your search and noble cause.

I found the owner in about 45 min. using the MyCarfax data, and a very helpful associate at a service station.

Cool! Hope you get it back. can you elaborate on my Carfax garage and how it helped?

I was going to suggested after you found out the area where it lived to contact the local PCA region.

You can add a car to your garage on carfax which pulls some of the data from a carfax report into your dashboard. That gave me the service history that was available. I called the service provider, and they kindly gave me the contact info for the person they had in there system from 2011. Turns out it was the current owner.

Now the question is does the current owner want to sell it back to you?

He's not in the market, but he will sell it. Problem is he want's about 3-5k above current market prices.

20k for an S2 Cabriolet with ~130k miles. Car looks to be in good shape and to me, it's 1 of 1.

I sure hope that shop called the customer first and got their consent. As an owner of a shop, I'd never even think about releasing information about any of my clients.

I usually leave my contact info with the shop and ask them to relay it.

Ohh, 1 of 1, so it is not red with black interior, from a fellow 1 of 1 owner, can you provide details? Or is it 1 of 1 because of your history with it?

And if I was the customer, I'd be really upset if a shop released my personal info without first consulting me.

A price above market isn't surprising.

If a previous owner of my 928 showed up out of the blue asking to buy it back, I'd sell (same goes for any random stranger that walked up and asked to buy it).

But it would take a good bit above market to get it.

Now the memory is fading but I remember a post here about a dozen years ago about a purple (I think) car that was used on the circuit. A lot of experts discussing whether it was real because the strut towers were a different color than the body. I think that was the S2. Also a one off color former show circuit car in NJ at one of the meets I went to around 04 +-.

Default She’s home again

I went and got the car today. The seller was great, and has taken great care of it. The price was worth it. The condition was very good, and the sentimental value makes it priceless.

Yes, the service center probably should have called him first, but it worked out. The seller was happy to be a part of this reunion, and he gets to find his dream car, a ‘68 Mustang.
